Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Two years passed.
The transition of power at Callaway Holdings—now renamed Vance-Callaway Enterprise—was seamless. Under my leadership and Josephine’s financial guidance, we shifted the company’s focus away from exclusive, predatory luxury developments toward sustainable, community-focused housing projects. The stock recovered, stronger and more stable than ever.
Weston and Camille’s relationship did not survive the fallout. Without the Callaway fortune to fund their extravagant lifestyle, their relationship crumbled under the weight of resentment and public shame. Weston was relegated to a minor consulting role, completely removed from any real power, living a quiet, unremarkable life.
But I didn’t care about them anymore. They were ghosts of a past life.
My life was at Vance Manor.
On a warm summer afternoon, the maple trees were lush and green, casting long, playful shadows across the lawn.
Two-year-old Marlo, with bright, curious eyes and a head full of wild curls, was running through the grass, laughing hysterically as she chased a golden retriever puppy.
“Slow down, sweetie!” Odette called out from the porch, laughing as she sipped her lemonade.
I walked down the steps, feeling the warm grass beneath my bare feet. I watched my daughter—free, happy, and surrounded by unconditional love. She would never know the cold, calculating world of the Callaways. She would grow up knowing she was wanted, cherished, and infinitely loved.
A car pulled up the long driveway.
Josephine stepped out, carrying a small, neat folder. But today, she wasn’t wearing her sharp attorney suit. She was wearing a comfortable sundress, a warm smile on her face.
“I brought the final reports,” Josephine said, walking over to join me. “The community center in Brooklyn is officially open. The children’s wing is named after your mother.”

“Thank you, Josephine,” I said, looking out over the beautiful land. “For everything.”
“You did this, Sable,” she said softly. “You took a moment of absolute destruction and turned it into a foundation for a beautiful life.”
