Chapter 5 - The Masterclass of Deception

For the next three months, I disappeared from the world.

I focused entirely on Marlo. I watched her smile for the first time. I listened to her tiny, soft coos. I held her close during the long, quiet nights at Vance Manor. With Odette by my side, I healed. My body grew stronger, my mind grew sharper, and the broken pieces of my heart began to knit themselves back together into something far tougher than before.

Meanwhile, in the city, Weston and his parents were celebrating what they believed was a total victory.

Through the grapevine and public registries, I tracked their movements. Weston had officially moved Camille into the Tribeca penthouse. They were planning a massive, lavish gala for Callaway Holdings’ 50th anniversary, where they intended to introduce Camille’s son, Arthur II, as the future heir to the Callaway dynasty.

They thought I had retreated to the countryside to lick my wounds and live quietly off my uncle’s modest savings. They assumed my silence was a sign of defeat.

They were wrong. My silence was a siege.

“The gala is this Thursday,” Josephine told me over the phone. “They’ve invited every major investor, every city official, and the entire financial press. They believe they are untouchable.”

“Are the papers ready?” I asked.

“Ready and filed under seal,” Josephine replied. “We lift the seal at exactly 8:00 PM on Thursday. Right as Weston takes the stage to deliver his keynote address.”

I looked at myself in the full-length mirror. I was wearing a stunning, tailored emerald-green gown that Odette had helped me select. My hair was swept up, revealing the sharp, defined lines of my jaw. I looked healthy. I looked powerful.

I looked like a woman who was about to take back everything that belonged to her daughter.

“Odette,” I called out.

My sister walked in, holding Marlo, who was sleeping peacefully in a soft pink onesie.

“You look breathtaking,” Odette said, her eyes shining with pride.

“Watch her tonight,” I whispered, kissing my daughter’s warm cheek. “When I come back, our future will be secure.”

“Go get them,” Odette smiled.
