Chapter 7 - The Crumbling Dynasty

“What is the meaning of this?” Preston roared, slamming the papers onto the podium. “This is a public outrage! Get these people out of here!”

“If you read page four, Preston,” I said, my voice calm, clear, and perfectly audible to the reporters clutching their recording devices, “you will see that Callaway Holdings has ninety seconds to declare bankruptcy, or surrender fifty-one percent of its voting shares to the Vance Estate. Because your son used five million dollars of land-trust capital to purchase a private residence for his mistress, you have violated Section 9 of the Master Lease.”

Weston’s eyes widened in horror. He turned to Camille, who looked suddenly terrified, clutching her baby tighter.

“Weston...” Camille whispered, her voice trembling. “What is she talking about?”

“The land beneath your feet,” I continued, looking directly at the crowd of investors, “the land beneath Callaway Tower, the land beneath the Residences at Park Ave—it does not belong to the Callaways. It belongs to me. And as of 8:00 PM tonight, the lease is terminated. Every building you own is now sitting on land that I control. You have no legal right to operate.”

The investors in the crowd didn’t hesitate. Within seconds, phones were pulled out. Panic spread like wildfire. People began rushing toward the exits to call their brokers. The stock of Callaway Holdings, traded publicly, was about to experience a historic, catastrophic collapse.

Preston sank into a chair on the stage, his hands shaking as he stared at the legal documents. He looked like an old man who had suddenly realized his entire life’s work was built on sand.

Weston stepped to the edge of the stage, looking down at me, his face pale and desperate.

“Sable... please,” he whispered, his confidence completely gone. “We can talk about this. We’re family.”

I looked at him, remembering the cold morning light in the hospital. I remembered him looking at our beautiful daughter and refusing to sign her birth certificate.

“I told you to never forget that moment, Weston,” I said softly. “This is the consequence.”

I turned and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the ruins of the Callaway dynasty behind me.
