Chapter 8 - The Verdict and the SentenceThe jury deliberated for less than four hours.

When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, the tension in the courtroom was thick enough to cut with a knife. Count after count of racketeering, money laundering, extortion, and interstate conspiracy—guilty, guilty, guilty.

The judge slammed his gavel down with finality.

"Lorenzo DeSantis, you are hereby sentenced to forty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole."

There were no gasps, no dramatics. Just the heavy, undeniable clanking of metal shackles as federal marshals surrounded Lorenzo and prepared to lead him out of the courtroom forever.

Before he was escorted through the heavy back doors, Lorenzo paused, turning his head to look directly at me one final time. His lips moved silently across the courtroom aisle, forming three distinct words: I am sorry.

I didn't nod. I didn't smile. I simply placed my hand over my round stomach, turned away, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight.

Two weeks later, the final divorce decree was signed and stamped by the federal judge. Every remaining cent of liquid capital seized from the DeSantis syndicate—legally funneled through my marital trust agreements and whistleblower rewards—was transferred into secure, diversified accounts under my name and my upcoming child's name.
