Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy oak doors of the mansion groaned open before I could reach the staircase. Lorenzo stepped inside, shucking off his designer overcoat with the practiced grace of a man who owned the city beneath his boots. His gaze swept the foyer, landing instantly on Elena, who stood frozen like a statue holding the small piece of thermal paper.

"Elena," Lorenzo murmured, his voice rich with gravel and exhaustion. "Tell me Emily is upstairs. We have a dinner downtown with the mayor, and she hates being rushed."

I stepped out from the shadows of the parlor archway.

Lorenzo stopped. His eyes flicked to me, noting the single duffel bag at my feet and the rigid, unnatural straightness of my posture. The easy, arrogant confidence that defined him flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, sharp wariness. He knew every expression in my playbook, yet mine was entirely blank.

"What's this?" he asked, gesturing vaguely to the bag. His tone carried the familiar edge of a master addressing a stray pet that had wandered too far from the porch.

"It's over, Lorenzo," I said, my voice steady in a way that surprised even me.

He didn't panic. Men like Lorenzo DeSantis do not panic over domestic quarrels; they manage them. A slow, indulgent smile touched the corners of his lips as he walked toward me, shedding the heavy aura of the boardroom to play the patient husband.

"Did you find out about the harbor expansion fund leak? Or is this about the charity gala seating chart again?" He reached out, his warm fingers brushing my cheek. "Come on, cara. You know how these anniversary weeks stress you out. Let's go upstairs and talk."

I flinched away from his touch. The contact that once brought me comfort now felt venomous, like a viper sliding across my skin.

"I saw you with Vanessa," I said quietly.

The silence that followed was absolute. Elena lowered her eyes, clutching the ultrasound photo tightly against her apron. Lorenzo's hand remained suspended in mid-air for a heartbeat before he withdrew it, his features hardening into the impenetrable mask of the East Coast syndicate boss.

"You shouldn't have been at the office unannounced," he said, devoid of apology, guilt, or hesitation. "Business requires certain... allowances, Emily. You live a life of absolute luxury because of the compromises I make behind closed doors. You accepted those terms when you said your vows."

"I accepted a husband, Lorenzo. Not a business arrangement with a cheat," I replied, stepping past him toward the front doors.

"You aren't leaving," he stated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the iron weight of command. Two armed bodyguards stepped out from the exterior darkness, blocking the double doors. "You are Mrs. DeSantis. You don't walk out on me. You stay right here, you get dressed for the gala, and we pretend this conversation never happened."

Before he could signal his men to grab my bag, Elena stepped forward, her frail frame surprisingly fierce as she planted herself directly in his line of sight.

"Let her pass, Mr. DeSantis," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly but clear. "Or you'll answer to more than just a broken home."

Lorenzo stared at her in cold disbelief, but the fraction of hesitation was all I needed. Ducking past the perimeter of his guards, I threw open the side service door, sprinting toward the waiting taxi I had summoned three streets away.

As the car accelerated into the night, I looked back through the rear window. Lorenzo stood on the stone steps, watching me vanish into the rain, still completely blind to the fact that the most valuable asset he possessed had just slipped through his fingers.
