Chapter 5 - In the Lion’s Den

Lorenzo stepped into the light of my flashlight, his tall frame cutting an imposing silhouette against the industrial gloom. His trench coat was damp from the rain, and his dark eyes burned with an unsettling mix of rage, triumph, and something dangerously close to relief.
He didn't draw a gun. He didn't have to. The two heavily armed enforcers standing quietly in the shadows behind him ensured compliance without a single word.
"Clever girl," Lorenzo murmured, taking slow, deliberate steps toward me. "My security team thought the north perimeter alarm was just a power surge. But I knew better. I knew my wife wasn't hiding in some damp motel in Ohio. You were always too smart for that."
I forced my breathing to remain steady, sliding my phone into my pocket while keeping my body angled protectively over the open ledger. "You're too late, Lorenzo. My attorney already has copies of everything in this room."
A low, humorless chuckle escaped his lips. He stopped just a few feet away, his gaze dropping down from my face to the heavy winter coat I wore. His eyes lingered there for a fraction of a second, registering the subtle fullness of my waistline before rising back to meet my eyes with a chilling intensity.
"Your attorney has nothing," Lorenzo said smoothly. "And even if he did, dead men don't file motions, Emily. Do you have any idea what it’s like sitting in that penthouse staring at your empty side of the bed? Do you know how many phone calls I’ve missed because I’ve been tearing this coast apart looking for you?"
"You were kissing your secretary on our anniversary," I spat back, the fury finally breaking through my fear. "You treated me like a decorative ornament while you built an empire on lies and blood. Did you really think I'd stay?"
Lorenzo's expression darkened. The charming, arrogant mask slipped away, revealing the ruthless syndicate boss beneath. He closed the remaining distance between us with terrifying speed, grabbing my arm in a bruising grip that left no room for argument.
"You are mine, Emily. You carry my name, you share my bed, and you walk in my world," he hissed, his face inches from mine. "You don't get to divorce me. You don't get to freeze my accounts. And you certainly don't get to walk out of my life."
As he yanked me slightly toward him to drag me out of the warehouse, a sharp, unexpected pain stabbed deep into my lower abdomen.
I gasped, my knees buckling beneath me as the cold reality of stress, fear, and physical exhaustion collided with my pregnancy.
Lorenzo caught me before I hit the concrete floor, his hands instinctively steadying my waist. As his palm pressed firmly against my stomach, his movements suddenly ceased. His eyes widened in absolute shock as he felt the undeniable contour of my body—and the faint, unmistakable flutter of life within.
"What..." Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking for the first time in our entire marriage. He stared down at my stomach, his hand trembling against my coat. "Emily... what is this?"
"It's the reason I'm leaving you," I whispered back through the pain, tears blurring my vision. "And you will never, ever touch my child."

Before he could recover from the paralyzation of his own shock, the distant wail of police sirens pierced the rainy night air.
Marcus hadn't just sent a diversion team to the north perimeter; he had tipped off a joint federal-state task force with the exact coordinates of Lorenzo's illegal archive warehouse.
