Chapter 6 - The Cedar Chest

The attic smelled of old cedar, dry paper, and dust motes dancing in the beam of my flashlight.
I navigated past stacked plastic storage bins and winter coat racks until I reached the far corner where the heavy wooden chest sat. I blew a thick layer of grey dust off the lid, coughing softly as the particles caught in the air.
Using the small silver key I had found in Daniel’s desk drawer, I inserted it into the brass padlock securing the chest.
Click.
The lock sprang open easily. I lifted the heavy wooden lid, letting out a soft sigh as the hinges creaked. Inside, right on top of a stack of faded black-and-white photographs and vintage postcards, sat a large, square manila envelope labeled in thick, black marker: FOR EMILY’S EYES ONLY.
My heart gave a sudden, hard thud against my ribs.
I pulled the envelope out, sitting cross-legged directly on the dusty attic floorboards. I broke the heavy wax seal—stamped with Daniel’s favorite personal seal, a small gear wheel—and slid the contents out into my lap.
There were several things inside.
First was a thick stack of printed emails between Daniel and a private investigator he had hired months ago. Skimming through them, my breath caught in my throat. Daniel hadn't just been defending himself against Vanessa’s extortion attempt; he had been digging into her financial background to protect our entire extended family. The investigator’s reports revealed that Vanessa had accumulated massive debts through illegal online gambling rings, and she had been using forged signatures to take out small loans under our parents’ names without their knowledge.
My blood ran cold. Vanessa wasn't just coming for my house; she was a ticking financial time bomb, and she had been planning to drag all of us down with her.
The second item in the envelope was a small, handwritten letter addressed directly to me.
I unfolded the crisp white paper, holding it closer to the beam of my flashlight as I read Daniel’s familiar handwriting line by line:
“My dearest Emily,
If you’re reading this in the attic, it means you found the key, which means you’re looking closer, exactly as I always knew you would. You have a habit of hiding your brilliance behind your kindness, Em, but never let anyone make you doubt your own strength.
I knew about Vanessa’s schemes long before she cornered me in the hallway. I kept quiet for a while because I wanted to handle it legally without breaking your heart about what kind of person your sister truly is. But people like Vanessa eventually trip over their own greed. I just cleared the path so she’d fall hard.
More importantly, I want you to know something about us. The house is completely paid off, and the deed is solely in your name. Everything we built is yours. Live in it, love in it, and don't let the shadows of the past keep you from stepping out into the sun.
I love you. Always and forever. - Daniel”

Tears blurred my vision, spilling over my eyelashes and dripping quietly onto the paper, staining the ink just a little bit. But this time, they weren't tears of grief or despair. They were tears of profound, overwhelming gratitude.
He had protected me even after he was gone.
