Chapter 3 - The Confession on Screen

The living room screen flickered, and then Daniel’s face filled the frame.

He looked healthy, wearing his favorite navy blue flannel shirt, sitting at his immaculate oak desk in his home office. The lighting was bright and even. Behind him, the bookshelves were organized meticulously by genre and author.

“Emily,” Daniel’s recorded voice said, warm and steady, filling the silent room. “If you’re watching this, it means I’m gone, and someone—most likely Vanessa—has tried to pull off a scam we talked about months ago.”

A collective gasp sucked the air right out of the room. Vanessa let out a strangled sound, taking a violent step forward as if she wanted to physically hurl herself at the television and smash it to pieces.

“No! That’s fake! That’s AI! She generated it!” Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking wildly, hysteria bleeding into every syllable. “Turn it off! Turn it off right now!”

No one moved to help her. My father stepped in front of her, his arm blocking her path. “Shut up, Vanessa. Let it play.”

On the screen, Daniel gave a slight, sad smile, shaking his head.

“I know how my sister-in-law operates,” the video-Daniel continued, completely unfazed by Vanessa’s off-screen shrieks. “About six months ago, Vanessa approached me with a proposition. She was in deep financial trouble—credit card debt, unpaid loans, bad investments. She asked me to lend her forty thousand dollars. When I refused, because she has a history of burning through money without accountability, she tried a different tactic.”

Vanessa’s knees seemed to buckle slightly. She grabbed onto the back of the sofa for support, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“She tried to trap me,” Daniel’s voice rang on. “She slipped something into my drink at a family dinner. I woke up the next morning in the guest room of her apartment. She claimed things had happened between us. She took photos of me sleeping next to her, completely clothed, and threatened to send them to Emily and post them online unless I signed a pre-written document transferring property rights or handing over cash.”

My mother let out a loud, agonizing cry, clutching her chest and sinking onto the edge of an armchair. My father looked like he might actually strike Vanessa.

“I didn't touch her,” Daniel said firmly on the screen. “I would never betray Emily. Emily is my life, my partner, my everything. But I knew Vanessa’s threat was dangerous. So, instead of panicking, I did what I do best. I gathered evidence. I recorded our subsequent phone calls where she laid out her entire extortion plot. I saved her text messages detailing her financial demands. And, just to be thorough, I installed a high-resolution security camera in my office facing the hallway where she ambushed me a second time.”

The video cut seamlessly to a spliced clip. On screen, we saw Vanessa cornering Daniel by his office door, hissing threats about destroying his marriage if he didn't sign over a stake in our house. Her voice—shrill, aggressive, and entirely unmasked—boomed through my living room surround-sound speakers for every single guest to hear.

“You think your precious Emily will believe you over a pregnant woman?” Vanessa’s recorded voice hissed on the screen. “I’ll ruin you. I’ll make sure everyone thinks you’re a monster.”

The room was dead silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Vanessa stood frozen, her eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated terror, trapped in the harsh light of her own exposed malice.
