Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The security footage clip finished playing, returning to Daniel sitting calmly at his desk.

“I gave copies of all these files to my attorney, Marcus Vance, with strict instructions,” Daniel said, looking directly out of the screen, as if he were staring right into our souls. “If anything ever happened to me—natural or otherwise—Marcus was instructed to immediately file criminal extortion charges and hand over the complete dossier to the proper authorities. Emily, if you are watching this, it means Marcus has already been notified.”

As if on cue, the front doorbell chimed.

Two sharp, rhythmic rings echoing through the quiet house.

Everyone jumped. Vanessa looked around wildly, like a trapped animal searching for an escape route that didn't exist. The front door wasn't even locked; guests had been drifting in and out all afternoon.

Uncle Greg walked over slowly and pulled the door open.

Standing on the porch were two uniformed police officers and a tall, sharp-dressed man carrying a leather briefcase. The man was Marcus Vance, Daniel’s attorney.

“Good afternoon,” Marcus said smoothly, stepping into the foyer. He looked around the crowded living room, his eyes lingering briefly on the television screen where Daniel’s video was still paused on a close-up of his face. “I am looking for Vanessa Miller.”

Vanessa let out a choked, terrified sob. She backed away until her spine hit the living room wall, sliding down slowly until she was crouched near the baseboard, her hands clamped over her ears as if she could block out reality itself.

“That’s her,” my father said, his voice hard as iron, pointing directly at his own daughter. He didn't look at her with anger anymore; he looked at her with profound, crushing disappointment. “Do whatever you need to do, officer.”

One of the police officers stepped forward, pulling a notebook from his pocket, while the other walked past toward Vanessa.

“Vanessa Miller?” the officer asked formally. “I am Officer Davis. We have received a formal complaint and a sworn legal dossier from the estate of Daniel Hayes regarding felony extortion, forgery of legal documents, and attempted fraud. I need you to stand up and place your hands behind your back.”

“No! No, you can't!” Vanessa shrieked, bursting into real, ugly tears now that the armor of her performance had completely shattered. She looked up at my mother, pleading frantically. “Mom! Mom, help me! They’re arresting me! Tell them it’s a lie! Tell Emily to drop the charges!”

My mother turned her face away, wiping a tear from her own cheek with a trembling hand, refusing to look at her.

“I didn't forge anything! The baby... the baby is real!” Vanessa sobbed hysterically as the officer gently but firmly hoisted her to her feet, clicking the steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a crisp set of documents. He walked over to me, offering me a sympathetic, professional nod.

“I am so sorry for your loss, Emily,” Marcus said quietly. “And I am sorry you had to go through this circus today. But Daniel’s foresight was absolute. The fake will she brought with her is not only legally void, but the act of presenting it as a binding instrument constitutes a separate felony offense of uttering a forged document.”

I looked down at the handcuffs glinting under the living room lights, then over at my nephew Tyler, who was peeking in from the backyard sliding glass door, looking completely bewildered.

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said steadily, my voice finally betraying a deep, long-overdue exhale of relief.
