Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Bloodline

By three in the morning, the rain had cleared, leaving the grounds of the Moretti estate drenched under a pale, unforgiving moon. In the soundproofed basement beneath the wine cellar, Director Arthur Sterling of St. Helena Hospital sat bound to an iron chair, sweating through his silk shirt.

I stood before him, the shadow of my coat stretching long against the concrete wall. Beside me, Marco held a thick leather binder containing twenty years of St. Helena’s financial records.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about, Don Moretti!" Sterling stammered, his eyes darting frantically around the dim room. "Your son was stillborn! We followed all protocols! The death certificate was signed by three attending physicians!"

"Three physicians who all received transfers from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands six hours after the birth," I said quietly, opening the binder and throwing a bank statement into his lap. "Accounts registered to a holding company owned by Matteo Moretti."

Sterling swallowed hard, his throat clicking. "That... that could be a coincidence. A retainer fee for future research—"

I didn't let him finish. I took a step forward, leaning down until my face was inches from his. "My son was found alive in a trash bag behind my house. The plastic bracelet on his wrist was signed by your chief nurse. Do not insult my intelligence, Arthur. You have ten seconds to tell me who the woman sitting in my house actually is, or I will hand you over to Marco. And Marco does not ask questions twice."

Sterling’s composure broke completely. Tears streamed down his cheeks, smearing his thin wire glasses. "It wasn't my idea! It was Matteo! He brought her to us six years ago! The real Valentina Vance was dying of late-stage leukemia. Matteo found Elena D’Agostino—a woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to Valentina—and paid for her reconstructive surgery in Switzerland!"

The truth landed like a sledgehammer, though I kept my face an unreadable mask of ice.

"Why?" I asked softly.

"Because the real Valentina was the sole heiress to the Vance shipping empire," Sterling blurted out, terrified for his life. "If she died without an heir, her family's shipping lines would revert to a public trust. But if she 'married' you, the Vance shipping routes would integrate into the Moretti syndicate’s network. Matteo wanted those routes for his illegal smuggling operations. He created a fake Valentina, installed her as your wife, and used her to control the trade lanes!"

"And my son?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm. "Why fake his death?"

"Because... because Elena was never meant to have a child with you!" Sterling squeaked. "She was supposed to stay on birth control. When she got pregnant, Matteo realized that a direct male heir from you would lock the estate forever under your line. Matteo’s debt to the Russian cartels was coming due. If you had an heir, Matteo could never claim the seat of the family. So they planned to eliminate the child at birth, forge the death documents, and then... then..."

"Then kill me," I finished the sentence for him.

"Yes!" Sterling sobbed. "They were going to poison you slowly over the next six months! With you dead and no heir, Matteo would take over everything, clear his debts, and give Elena half the shipping assets!"

I stood up straight, feeling a cold, crystalline clarity settle inside my mind. The puzzle was complete. The woman I had held, the woman who had cried in my arms over 'our' lost child, was a paid operative, a ghost raised from an illegal medical procedure, performing a role in a multi-million-dollar execution plot.

"Marco," I said.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Lock Director Sterling in the lower vault. Keep him alive. He will be my chief witness when I call the Council of Captains."

"And Matteo and the woman?"

"I am going to pay my 'wife' a visit."

I walked up the stone stairs, my shoes clicking against the cold steps. I didn't feel anger anymore; anger was a weak, burning emotion that clouded judgment. What I felt now was the cold, precision instrument of retribution.

I entered the holding cell where Elena D’Agostino—the fake Valentina—was sitting on a wooden bench. She had removed her black gloves, revealing long, manicured nails. When she saw me enter, she didn't look afraid. She smiled—a thin, cruel curving of her lips that made my blood run cold.

"So," she said, leaning back against the cold brick wall. "The great Alessandro Moretti finally figured out he’s been sleeping with a phantom."

"Where is the real Valentina buried?" I asked, standing across from her.

"In an unmarked grave outside Zurich," she said carelessly. "She died twelve years ago, just like the record said. Matteo found me in a back-alley clinic in Milan. I was a disgraced nurse facing twenty years for illegal organ trade. He offered me a new face, a new name, and a life of luxury. All I had to do was pretend to love a stoic, arrogant mafia lord who cared more about his territory than his wife."

"You put a newborn infant in a plastic bag and threw him into the rain," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"He was an inconvenience," she sneered. "He wasn't supposed to exist. You were supposed to sign the documents tonight, Matteo was supposed to take the reins, and I was supposed to retire to the French Riviera with fifty million dollars. Your stupid housekeeper’s child ruined everything."

"Sophia didn't ruin everything," I said, reaching into my jacket. "She saved my legacy. And she exposed yours."

I pulled out a small electronic recorder and clicked off the light. Her confession was secured.

"You think you've won?" Elena laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Matteo’s backers aren't just local thugs, Alessandro. The Solntsevskaya bratva invested thirty million into this takeover. If Matteo doesn't deliver the Moretti network by tomorrow morning, their enforcers will burn this city to the ground. You and your bastard baby won't survive the week."

"Then let them come," I replied, turning toward the door. "They will find that the Moretti family is under new management. Mine."
