Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW RETURNS

The crisp autumn air of October brought vibrant hues of orange and red to the sprawling woodlands surrounding the Moretti estate. The security upgrades Aleandro had ordered months ago were now practically impenetrable—biometric scanners at every gate, thermal imaging along the perimeter walls, and an elite response team patrolling the grounds 24/7.
Inside the mansion, preparations were underway for Emma’s fifth-and-a-half birthday party—a festive gathering requested by the little girl, who simply wanted a chocolate cake and to wear her diamond rabbit locket.
Sophia was in the grand kitchen, working alongside the master pastry chef to finalize the menu, when the heavy internal security phone on the wall began to ring with a harsh, urgent tone.
Sophia picked up the receiver immediately. “Operations desk. Sophia Carter speaking.”
“Sophia,” Marco’s voice came through the speaker, tight, clipped, and instantly sending a spike of adrenaline through her veins. “Lock down the East Wing immediately. Do not leave the kitchen.”
“Marco? What’s happening? Is it a breach?” Sophia’s heart hammered against her ribs, her mind flashing back to the night of the handcuffs.
“We have an unverified visitor at the main gate,” Marco said rapidly. “An individual claiming to hold a high-level federal subpoena tied to the old Moretti asset freeze. But our sensors show it’s not the FBI. It’s someone from the Chicago syndicate—one of Victor’s old lieutenants trying to test our new perimeter before the winter freeze.”
Before Sophia could answer, a loud, muffled explosion echoed from the direction of the front gates, shaking the heavy windows of the main house.
Alarms began to wail across the estate—a shrill, rhythmic shriek that pierced the autumn air.
“Get Emma!” Marco shouted through the phone before the line suddenly went dead with a loud static hiss.
Sophia dropped the receiver. Panic, cold and sharp, flooded her veins. She didn't think twice. She bolted out of the kitchen, sprinting through the service corridors toward the East Wing suite where Emma was playing with her building blocks.
As she burst into the hallway, she saw three armed security guards rushing toward the front foyer, their tactical rifles raised. But something was wrong.
One of the guards suddenly staggered backward, clutching his chest as a silencer-muffled pop echoed down the corridor. He collapsed to the polished marble floor, lifeless.
Sophia froze, her breath catching in her throat. Her legs turned to lead.
Stepping around the corner from the grand staircase was a man in a black tactical vest, holding a suppressed pistol. It wasn't an assassin looking for Aleandro—it was a rogue enforcer from Chicago, a man named Dante Rossi, whose face was scarred by an old knife wound.
Rossi spotted Sophia instantly. A cruel, ugly grin spread across his face.
“Well, well,” Rossi muttered, stepping over the fallen guard. “The little maid who caused all our trouble. Boss Victor may be locked away, but the Chicago family doesn't let loose ends tie themselves up. Where’s the brat?”
Sophia’s maternal instincts roared to life, overriding her terror. She backed away toward the East Wing door, her hands trembling. “Stay away from her!”
Rossi raised his pistol, taking a deliberate, cold aim straight at Sophia’s chest. “A shame. But orders are orders. Clean slate for the new regime.”
Sophia closed her eyes, bracing for the impact, throwing her arms out as if her physical body could form a shield for her daughter sleeping down the hall.
A deafening roar shattered the silence of the corridor.
It wasn't a silenced pistol. It was the thunderous boom of a heavy-caliber firearm.
Rossi’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock. The pistol slipped from his fingers, clattering against the marble floor. A massive exit wound burst through the back of his tactical vest, spraying dark blood across the wallpaper.
Before Rossi’s body could even hit the ground, Aleandro Moretti stepped out from the shadows of the adjacent archway.
Aleandro’s face was a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. He held a custom-engraved .45 caliber pistol in his right hand, still smoking from the shot. He didn't look like a billionaire philanthropist or a reformed businessman anymore. He looked like the Ghost of Manhattan—the apex predator who ruled the city with blood and iron.
He fired a second shot into the floor beside Rossi’s motionless body, just to make sure.
Then, he dropped the gun into his holster, turned, and strode rapidly toward Sophia, who was shaking violently against the wall.
“Sophia! Look at me,” Aleandro commanded, his voice urgent but steady. He grabbed her by the shoulders, his dark eyes scanning her frantically for any injuries. “Are you hurt? Did he touch you?”
Sophia swallowed hard, tears streaming down her face as she shook her head. “N-no... I’m okay. But Emma... she’s in the playroom down the hall...”
Aleandro didn’t wait. He swept past her, kicking open the heavy oak door of the East Wing playroom.
Emma was sitting inside under a small play tent, clutching her pink rabbit backpack to her chest, her eyes wide with terror from the gunshots.
When Aleandro knelt down and pulled back the fabric of the tent, Emma burst into tears and threw her small arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.
“Giant... I was scared,” she sobbed.
Aleandro wrapped his strong, steady arms around the little girl, lifting her up against his chest as he stood back up. He closed his eyes tightly for a brief second, breathing out a shuddering breath of pure relief.
“I’ve got you, Emma,” Aleandro murmured, his voice cracking slightly with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to show. “I’ve got you. No one will ever hurt you in this house again. I swear it on my life.”
May you like
Sophia stood in the doorway, watching the most feared man in New York hold her little daughter with such fierce, absolute tenderness that her heart swelled until it hurt.
The shadow had tried to return, but the fortress had held.
