Chapter 6 - THE AWAKENING IN THE EAST WING

The morning sunlight streamed through the tall arched windows of the East Wing suite, warming the plush Persian rugs and casting a golden glow over the mahogany furniture.

Emma sat cross-legged on the massive velvet sofa, a warm cup of cocoa cradled in her small hands. She was wearing a brand-new, cream-colored cashmere sweater that the head housekeeper had hurriedly sourced from a luxury boutique, though it was still a bit too big for her tiny frame.

Next to her sat Sophia.

Sophia’s face was pale, her eyes still shadowed with the lingering trauma of the previous night’s nightmare, but she was alive. She was free. The federal charges had been dropped before they even hit the docket, dismissed by a federal judge citing 'overwhelming evidence of systemic fabrication and malicious framing.'

When the heavy oak door of the suite swung open, both mother and child flinched.

Aleandro walked in.

He had removed his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, corded muscle of a man who lived in the crossfire. He looked tired, the hard lines around his eyes betraying the sleepless night, but the terrifying aura of a mob boss was entirely absent.

He looked simply like a man walking into a room where he didn't quite know how to belong.

Sophia immediately stood up, pulling Emma slightly behind her skirt, her protective instincts flaring up instantly.

“Mr. Moretti,” Sophia breathed, her voice trembling slightly. “They... they told us we were free to go. That the charges were cleared. But... I want to know what happens now. Do we owe you something? Is there a debt?”

Aleandro stopped a few feet away, holding up a hand to keep her at ease.

“You don't owe me a damn thing, Sophia,” Aleandro said, his voice unusually soft. “If anything, this house owes its existence to you and your daughter.”

Emma peeked out from behind her mother’s skirt, her big brown eyes locking onto Aleandro’s face. She clutched her pink rabbit backpack, which sat safely on the sofa cushion beside her.

“Are you still sick, giant?” Emma asked, her childish voice breaking the heavy tension in the room.

Aleandro let out a low, genuine chuckle—a sound that none of his capos had ever heard in their lifetimes. He walked a little closer and knelt down on one knee, bringing himself down to Emma’s eye level.

“No, little one. I’m not sick anymore,” Aleandro said, his dark eyes softening noticeably. “Because of you. You saved my life when everyone else in this house was looking the other way.”

Emma blinked, tilting her head. “My mommy said I shouldn't take things that don't belong to me. But I took your medicine. Are you mad?”

“Never,” Aleandro said firmly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it to reveal a custom-made, miniature gold locket shaped like a tiny rabbit, encrusted with small, delicate diamonds. “This belongs to you now. A token of gratitude from the Moretti family. Whenever you wear it, no one in this city will ever dare touch you or your mother.”

Sophia stared at the locket, her breath catching in her throat. She knew the weight of that symbol. It wasn't just jewelry; it was a permanent, unbreakable shield. In the underworld, bearing the Moretti mark meant you were untouchable by decree of the boss himself.

“Mr. Moretti... Aleandro,” Sophia started, tears welling in her eyes, “we can’t accept this. It’s too much. We just want to pack our things, go back to our small apartment, and live a normal life.”

Aleandro stood up, shaking his head slowly.

“There is no going back to that apartment, Sophia,” Aleandro said, his tone shifting into one of absolute authority that brook no argument. “Your name was dragged through the mud in every news outlet in New York. Even with the charges dropped, the vultures out there will never leave you in peace if you go back to the slums.”

He stepped closer, looking directly into Sophia’s weary eyes.

“This mansion has over fifty empty rooms. But more importantly, it has security, stability, and people who will protect your daughter with their lives. I am appointing you as the Head of Domestic Operations for the entire Moretti estate. A salary that ensures Emma will never have to worry about a single medical bill, a college fund, or a lack of safe housing for the rest of her life.”

Sophia stood frozen, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “Why? Why do this for us? You don't even know us.”

“I know what loyalty looks like,” Aleandro said quietly, glancing down at Emma, who was happily examining the diamond rabbit locket in her small hands. “And I know what betrayal looks like. I spent my whole life surrounded by people who shared my blood and wanted me dead. You and your daughter walked into my study with nothing, and you saved my life because it was the right thing to do.”

He turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass knob.

“Take the morning to rest, Sophia. Marco will have a security detail assigned to your personal safety permanently. Welcome to your new home.”

As the door clicked shut, leaving mother and daughter alone in the sunlit suite, Sophia pulled her little girl into her arms, burying her face in Emma’s dark hair as a profound, overwhelming wave of relief washed over them both.
