Chapter 6 - The Lion’s Wrath

When Dante returned, the mansion was surrounded by blue and red flashing lights, but the police did not enter the gates. They stood outside, a barrier against the press, while Dante’s personal security swept the grounds.

Dante did not walk into the house. He ran.

I was sitting in the library, a thick blanket wrapped around my shoulders, the triplets curled around me like a pack of wolf pups. My side was heavily bruised, but nothing was broken.

The heavy doors flew open, and Dante stormed in. His coat was gone, his shirt torn at the collar, his face a mask of absolute, terrifying fury.

He stopped when he saw us.

He didn't look at his guards, who stood in the corners with their heads bowed. He walked straight to the sofa, falling to his knees before me. He didn't say a word. He simply reached out and pulled all four of us into his arms, his chest shaking with a silent, ragged breath.

"You are safe," he whispered against my hair. "You are safe."

"They came for the children, Dante," I whispered, my voice trembling now that the adrenaline had faded. "They knew the security layout."

Dante pulled back, his gray eyes burning with a cold, murderous light. "I know who sent them. The men we caught... they belong to a mercenary crew hired by a shell company. A company registered under the name of Sophie Crane."

My breath caught. "Sebastian’s sister?"

"They wanted to hurt me," Dante said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, flat tone. "They thought by taking my children, they could force me to back down from the shipping routes. And they thought they could use you as a message."

He stood up, his hand reaching down to take mine. He pulled me up gently, mindful of my bruised ribs, and looked at the children.

"Enzo," Dante called out.

The older man stepped forward. "Yes, Don Bellandi."

"Take the children to the secure room downstairs. No one enters without my personal word."

"Father," Leo said, standing up. "What are you going to do?"

Dante looked at his eldest son. "I am going to finish a war, Leo. Keep your brother and sister safe."

Leo nodded, his young face solemn. He took Mia and Nico’s hands and followed Enzo out of the room.

Once they were gone, Dante turned to me. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a heavy, antique gold ring set with a flawless, dark red ruby.

"This was my mother’s," Dante said, taking my hand. "She was a woman of the old country. She taught me that a man who cannot protect his family is not a man at all. Evelyn... I did not ask you to join this war. But you stood between my children and the dark. Will you stand beside me as my wife?"

I looked at the ruby, then at the man who had given me a home, a purpose, and a love that didn't demand I change who I was.

"Yes," I whispered. "Yes, Dante."

He slid the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, a heavy, golden anchor.

"Now," Dante said, his lips brushing my forehead. "Stay here. I have to go to a meeting."

May you like

"Dante," I caught his arm. "Be careful."

He offered me a small, cold smile that held no mercy. "They touched my family, Evelyn. They do not get to be careful."
