Chapter 5 - Sanctuary in the Pines

The SUV tore through the desolate industrial outskirts of the city, tires hissing against the slush-covered highway. Inside the vehicle, the heater was blasting, but Emma couldn't stop shivering. Whether from the bitter cold of the alley or the sheer, numbing terror of the past twenty minutes, she couldn't tell.

In the back seat, she finally managed to calm Lily down, rocking her back and forth while whispering soft, broken reassurances.

In the front seat, Roman drove with one hand gripping the steering wheel, the other pressing a handkerchief against the bleeding wound on his shoulder. His face was pale, tight with pain, but his eyes remained locked on the dark road ahead.

"Are you... are you going to be okay?" Emma asked, her voice cracking.

"It's a flesh wound," Roman muttered without looking back. "Vance underestimated how fast I could clear a room. But he'll regroup. That building is compromised. We can't go back to my office, and we certainly can't go to your apartment."

"My apartment?" Emma gasped. "They know where I live?"

"They know everything connected to Caleb," Roman said grimly. "Which means right now, you and Lily are tied to a target as big as a billboard."

Emma felt a fresh wave of panic choke her. "I didn't ask for this. I just wanted a normal life. I wanted to raise my daughter in peace. Caleb told me he was a regular mechanic. He never said anything about ledgers, syndicates, or men trying to kill us!"

Roman finally glanced at her in the rearview mirror. His expression softened just a fraction, the sharp edges of his ruthless persona blurring into something weary and sorrowful.

"Caleb lived a double life," Roman said quietly. "He wanted out. That's why he stole from them. He thought if he took their leverage, he could buy his freedom, disappear, and start over clean. He thought he could protect the people he cared about by keeping them in the dark."

"And instead, he got himself killed—or worse," Emma whispered, tears blurring her vision.

"We don't know that he's dead," Roman said, though his voice lacked conviction. "Vance's men have been looking for him for seventeen months. If they had his body, they would have stopped searching long ago. The fact that they're still hunting means Caleb either hid the ledger somewhere they can't find, or... he's still running."

"Where are we going?" Emma asked, watching the city skyline fade behind them as they entered the dense, wooded suburbs north of the city.

"A safehouse," Roman replied. "An old property of mine. No one knows about it except a few people I trust with my life."

Twenty minutes later, the SUV turned down an unpaved, snow-choked driveway hidden deep within a thick pine forest. At the end of the road sat a sprawling, stone-and-timber cabin, dark and isolated against the winter storm.

Roman killed the engine, turned to look back at Emma and Lily, and said the words that would change everything: "We stay here until we find out what Caleb left behind... and until we end this once and for all."
