Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The silence in the penthouse office stretched out, heavy and suffocating. Emma could hear the distant hum of the city traffic far below and the soft, rhythmic breathing of little Lily on the sofa.

"Price," Emma whispered, the word escaping her lips before she could stop it.

Roman turned his head sharply, his dark eyes narrowing. "What did you say?"

Emma swallowed hard, her throat dry. The secret she had guarded so fiercely for over a year—the shield she used to protect herself and her daughter from the dark shadows of Caleb's past—suddenly felt paper-thin.

"His name," Emma said, her voice trembling. "Caleb... was his last name Price?"

Roman stepped forward, the distance between his desk and the couch closing in seconds. His towering frame cast a long shadow over her. "How do you know that name? Who told you about my brother?"

"He didn't tell me he had a brother named Roman," Emma said, holding up a hand as if to ward off a physical blow. "He... he only told me his name was Caleb Price. He said his family was gone. That he was completely alone in the world."

Roman gripped the back of the sofa, his knuckles turning white. "He lied to you. Or he was running so fast he forgot who he was." He stared down at Emma, scanning her face with an intensity that made her skin prick. "What is your connection to him?"

"He was Lily's father," Emma whispered.

The words hung in the air like glass shards. Roman froze. He looked from Emma's pale, desperate face down to the sleeping infant wrapped in his expensive wool jacket. The resemblance, once hidden beneath a blanket of exhaustion and shadow, suddenly became glaringly obvious. The shape of the brow, the curve of the lips, the stubborn set of the chin even in sleep—it was all Caleb.

"A niece," Roman breathed, the realization dawning on him with the weight of an avalanche. "You... you have Caleb's child."

"I didn't know about you," Emma pleaded, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "He never mentioned a brother, let alone a man like Roman Callahan. When I found out I was pregnant, he promised he would fix everything. He said he had to take care of a dangerous mistake, just for one night, and then he would come back to us. But he never came back. I waited months. I checked the hospitals, the morgues, the news. Nothing. I had to raise Lily on my own, working cleaning shifts just to keep a roof over our heads."

Roman closed his eyes, a muscle ticking in his jaw. He dragged a hand through his dark hair, the cold, composed businessman completely vanishing, replaced by a man drowning in old ghosts and sudden, shocking reality.

"He didn't just run from trouble, Emma," Roman said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He ran with it. And now... now that trouble knows he had a family."

Before Emma could ask what he meant, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the quiet. The private elevator chime chimed, followed by the muffled sound of shouting outside the heavy double doors.

Roman's head snapped toward the entrance. All the vulnerability vanished in an instant, replaced by lethal, predatory focus.

"Stay here," Roman commanded, reaching inside his jacket to draw a heavy, dark-metal firearm with practiced ease. "Do not make a sound."
