Chapter 8 - The Long Road to Justice

The drive through the deserted downtown streets of Newark felt surreal. Streetlights flickered overhead, casting long, melancholic reflections across the wet asphalt. In the backseat, little Sophia had finally exhausted herself, crying softly until she drifted off to sleep against the fabric of the worn seat cushion.
"You handled yourself back there like a veteran," Vittorio murmured, breaking the heavy silence as they stopped at a red light. He was pressing a clean towel against his bleeding side, his face pale from blood loss.
"I grew up with three older brothers in a rough neighborhood," Emma kept her eyes fixed on the road. "You learn how to throw things when you have to."
Vittorio let out a low, appreciative chuckle that quickly turned into a wince. "When this is over, you won't have to worry about nursing school tuition, or rent, or overdue bills ever again. I make sure my debts are always paid in full."
"I didn't help you for money, Mr. Maroney," Emma said firmly. "Remember that."
"I do remember," Vittorio replied softly. "That is why you are still breathing."

As they approached Federal Plaza on Broad Street, two black unmarked sedans suddenly pulled out from a side alley, blocking their path. Emma's heart leapt into her throat as headlights flashed blindingly in their faces.
"Stay low," Vittorio commanded sharply, drawing his weapon as the doors of the unmarked cars swung open.
