Chapter 10 - A New Chapter

Six months later, the morning sun poured warmly through the large bay windows of a brand-new, beautifully renovated café on Market Street.
The walls were painted a warm, inviting cream, and the scent of freshly brewed artisan espresso filled the air. Behind the polished marble counter stood Emma Richardson, wearing a crisp white apron—minus the old crooked name tag.
The federal trials against the Moretti syndicate had concluded the previous month, resulting in sweeping indictments and a complete dismantling of the criminal underworld in Newark. Vittorio Maroney had testified before a federal grand jury, securing a protected immunity deal in exchange for cleaning up the city's shipping ports once and for all. He had since relocated overseas to ensure a peaceful, normal life for his daughter.
The bell above the café door chimed gently, and a little girl with bright eyes and a pink raincoat skipped inside, holding the hand of a well-dressed man with dark hair touched with gray at the temples.
Emma looked up from the espresso machine, her face lighting up with a wide, genuine smile.
"Well, hello there," Emma said, wiping her hands on a cloth. "What can I get for my favorite regular customers?"
Sophia smiled brightly, leaning against the counter. "Two hot chocolates with extra marshmallows, please, Aunt Emma."
Vittorio smiled warmly, placing a small, beautifully wrapped box on the counter beside her register. "And a fresh start for everyone," he added quietly.

Emma opened the box to find a sleek, brand-new set of professional medical instruments alongside a handwritten note confirming her full-ride scholarship to Columbia University's nursing program, paid in full.
She looked up at Vittorio, her heart full, knowing that sometimes the trouble that finds you in the dark is only the beginning of a much brighter story.
