Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Shadows

When Emma hurried back to the storage room, Sophia was sitting up.

The little girl’s wide, dark eyes—so much like her father's—were fixed on the shelf of canned goods, but she wasn't crying anymore. Vittorio was leaning heavily against a stack of crates, clutching his side. His breath came in shallow, ragged gasps.

"She's waking up," Vittorio whispered.

Emma knelt beside Sophia, offering a paper cup of water. "Hey there, Sophia. Can you drink a little bit of this for me? Just a sip."

Sophia looked at Emma, her small fingers reaching out to lightly touch the crooked metal name tag pinned to Emma’s apron. "Em-ma," the little girl read aloud, her voice tiny and fragile.

"That's right," Emma smiled gently, easing the cup to her lips. "You're safe here, sweetheart. Nobody is going to hurt you."

Vittorio closed his eyes for a long moment, letting out a slow, painful sigh. When he opened them again, the raw menace that defined his reputation had been replaced entirely by a father's desperate exhaustion. "They aren't just street thugs, Emma. They are part of the Moretti syndicate. They want the shipping manifests from dock bay twelve. If they get them, hundreds of innocent people die in the crossfire of what's coming next week."

Emma stared at him, realizing the gravity of the web she had just stepped into. "Why you? Why target your family?"

"Because I refused to let our ports be used for their underground weapons pipeline," Vittorio said coldly, his jaw setting. "They thought eliminating my brother would make me surrender. They were wrong. But they didn't count on me grabbing Sophia and running."

"And now they're tracking you," Emma said.

"My phone is still in my coat pocket. If they have the signal enhancer, they can trace it within a three-mile radius," Vittorio admitted grimly.

Emma’s eyes widened. "Give me the phone."
