Chapter 8 - The Gardner Estate Sanctuary

The private medical transport van pulled smoothly through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Gardner Estate, rolling up the winding, tree-lined driveway toward the grand neoclassical manor that had stood as our family’s sanctuary for over a century.
As the vehicle came to a gentle stop in front of the sweeping marble steps, the heavy oak doors of the manor opened wide. A line of loyal household staff—led by Mrs. Higgins, our head housekeeper of forty years—stood waiting to welcome us, their faces beaming with genuine warmth and excitement.
The driver carefully opened the rear doors, and I stepped out into the crisp, clean afternoon air, holding Sawyer securely in my arms while a specialized pediatric nurse carried Quinn. My grandfather stepped out right behind us, leaning on his silver-handled cane as he looked up at the majestic facade of his ancestral home.
“Welcome home, little ones,” Mrs. Higgins said softly, her eyes filling with tears as she stepped forward to gently adjust the cashmere blanket around Sawyer. “The nursery has been fully prepared exactly as you requested, Ms. Jade. Everything is ready for them.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Higgins,” I replied, stepping up the marble steps and entering the grand foyer.
The interior of the manor was breathtaking—high vaulted ceilings, sweeping crystal chandeliers, and warm mahogany wood panels that radiated timeless elegance. But more than its grandeur, the house felt alive. It felt safe. It felt like a true home.
We made our way up the grand staircase to the newly renovated west wing, which had been transformed into a magnificent, state-of-the-art nursery suite. Sunlight poured through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking acres of lush private gardens and tranquil reflection ponds. The room was decorated in calming shades of ivory, soft sage, and pearl gray, featuring two handcrafted cribs, specialized medical monitoring equipment tucked discreetly behind elegant cabinetry, and comfortable velvet rocking chairs positioned right by the window.
The pediatric nurse gently placed Quinn into her crib, while I carefully laid Sawyer down beside her. Both babies stirred slightly, stretching their tiny arms before settling back into a deep, peaceful sleep, completely untethered from wires, tubes, or alarms.
“They are safe here, Jade,” my grandfather said softly, standing beside me as we looked down at the sleeping twins. “No one will ever be able to reach them or hurt them here.”

“I know, Grandfather,” I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder. “For the first time in three years, I finally feel like I can truly breathe.”
“Good,” he replied firmly, wrapping a warm arm around my shoulders. “Because starting tomorrow, a new chapter begins. You are no longer hiding in the shadows of someone else’s expectations. You are the future of this family, and these two are going to grow up knowing exactly who they are and what they represent.”
