Chapter 3 - The Collapse of a Fraud

By 7:00 AM the next morning, the breakfast tray sitting untouched on the bedside table in the Gardner Royal Suite of Beacon Heights Medical Center was entirely overshadowed by the massive tablet screen displaying real-time financial analytics.

I sat propped up against crisp Egyptian cotton pillows, wearing a soft cashmere robe provided by my grandfather’s staff. The surgical incision in my abdomen still ached when I moved too quickly, but the specialized pain management regimen administered by the newly appointed head of nursing had worked wonders. My body was healing, fueled by a cold, resolute clarity.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Marcus Vance—not Weston, but Marcus’s lead corporate attorney, who had hastily switched allegiance once he realized who was backing me—stepped into the room. He carried a thick leather briefcase and looked profoundly shaken.

“Good morning, Ms. Gardner,” Marcus said, his voice trembling slightly as he approached the foot of the bed. He still hadn't fully recovered from the shock of learning that the quiet, unassuming freelance accountant his firm occasionally crossed paths with was actually the sole heiress to the Gardner Global fortune.

“Cut the pleasantries, Marcus,” I said, my voice ice-cold. “Tell me what our forensic accountants found in Weston’s corporate records overnight.”

Marcus swallowed hard, unzipping the briefcase and pulling out a stack of heavily annotated financial statements. He laid them out across the rolling over-bed table.

“It’s worse than we anticipated, Ms. Gardner,” Marcus reported, adjusting his glasses. “When Mr. Gardner ordered the immediate termination of all Beacon Heights contracts and regional affiliate funding, it triggered a massive liquidity crisis for Vance Medical Supply. Banks that had extended him multi-million-dollar lines of credit immediately demanded an emergency covenant review.”

“And what did the review reveal?” I asked, sipping a cup of herbal tea.

“Fraud,” Marcus answered bluntly. “Extensive, systemic financial fraud. To maintain his extravagant lifestyle and fund his mistress, Ashley, Weston had been artificially inflating purchase orders, double-billing regional clinics for surgical kits that were never delivered, and funneling corporate capital into offshore shell accounts registered under fake names.”

I leaned back, a humorless smile touching my lips. “So when he bragged about emptying our joint accounts and leaving me penniless, he was actually just robbing Peter to pay Paul to keep his collapsing house of cards standing.”

“Precisely,” Marcus confirmed, tapping a highlighted column of numbers. “Furthermore, because you signed the divorce agreement yesterday morning—which he drafted to ensure he received 100% ownership of the company and all associated corporate assets—he legally accepted 100% of the corporate liability. You were completely absolved of all business debt the moment you signed those papers.”

I had anticipated that exact outcome. When Weston handed me the divorce papers filled with malicious clauses designed to strip me of everything, he had assumed the company was a golden goose. He was too arrogant, too blinded by greed, to realize that his business was actually a ticking time bomb loaded with illegal liabilities. By greedily demanding sole ownership to shut me out, he had willingly taken full legal custody of a massive federal fraud investigation.

“Where is Weston right now?” I asked.

“Federal agents seized his penthouse apartment in downtown Beacon Heights at 5:30 AM,” Marcus said, a slight edge of satisfaction in his voice. “His bank accounts—including the personal funds he stole from you—have been frozen under suspicion of money laundering and wire fraud. He is currently being held at the federal detention center downtown, awaiting an emergency arraignment.”

“Did Ashley stay with him?” I inquired, raising an eyebrow.

Marcus shook his head with a faint grimace. “Not even for twenty minutes. The moment federal marshals handcuffed Weston and informed him of the asset freeze, Ashley grabbed her designer bags—including your ivory cashmere coat, which security promptly confiscated at the lobby doors—and tried to flee. Agents detained her for questioning regarding her direct involvement in the corporate embezzlement scheme, as company funds were frequently used to finance her luxury shopping sprees.”

Poetic justice, delivered with surgical precision.

“Make sure our legal team provides all necessary audit trails directly to the federal prosecutor handling the case,” I instructed calmly. “I want to ensure there is an airtight case against him. I don’t just want him bankrupt, Marcus. I want him legally barred from ever operating a business in the medical sector again.”

“Consider it done, Ms. Gardner,” Marcus said, packing up his remaining documents and offering a respectful bow before exiting the suite.

As the door clicked shut, my grandfather stepped out from the adjoining private study, leaning on his silver-handled cane. A small, approving smile played on his lips.

“You handled that with the exact cold calculation your grandmother used to possess,” Anthony Gardner said, walking over to the window that overlooked the sprawling hospital courtyard below. “He thought he could discard you like trash. Now he’s facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary.”

“He made his choice, Grandfather,” I replied softly, turning my gaze back toward the secure internal monitor streaming a live feed of Sawyer and Quinn sleeping peacefully in their high-tech incubators. “My only focus now is right here. How are their lab results this morning?”

“Dr. Thorne says they are gaining weight, their lungs are expanding naturally, and their immune markers are stabilizing faster than expected,” my grandfather said warmly, walking over to sit in the armchair beside my bed. “They are strong, Jade. They have Gardner blood running through their veins. No amount of betrayal can change that.”

I reached out and touched the encrypted smartphone on the bedside table. The storm had passed, the wreckage had been cleared, and for the first time in three years, I was completely in control of my own destiny.
