Chapter 5 - The Final Judgment

The silence in the Gardner Royal Suite was absolute. The only sound was the shallow, ragged breathing of Weston Vance as he knelt in his orange detention jumpsuit on the polished hardwood floor, staring up at me with eyes hollowed out by total despair.

Behind him, the two federal marshals stood impassive, their hands resting professionally on their utility belts, waiting for the brief diversion to conclude. Evelyn Vance had collapsed onto a nearby velvet sofa, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she stared at the floor, finally realizing the apocalyptic magnitude of her son’s catastrophic mistake.

“Jade...” Weston whispered again, his voice breaking into a pathetic sob as he reached out a trembling hand toward the hem of my cashmere robe. “Please... I’m begging you. Drop the federal complaints. Tell the prosecutors it was a misunderstanding. We were married... we shared a life—”

I stepped back gracefully, avoiding his touch entirely.

“You made sure to emphasize our separation yesterday morning, Weston,” I reminded him, my voice entirely devoid of emotion. “You reminded me that the apartment lease was in your name, that my credit cards were canceled, and that the joint accounts were completely emptied. You told me that I and these ‘runts’ were completely on our own.”

Weston flinched as if he had been physically struck.

“And remember what you told me to do?” I continued, leaning down slightly so my eyes met his terrified gaze. “You told me to call a shelter. Well, I made a phone call instead. And now, you are exactly where your greed, your narcissism, and your criminal negligence have earned you a permanent residence.”

“Mr. Gardner, ma'am, we need to resume transport,” one of the federal marshals stated professionally, stepping forward and gently pulling Weston up by his arms.

Weston didn’t fight back. All of his arrogant bluster, his smug corporate dominance, and his cruel superiority had completely evaporated, leaving behind a broken, hollow shell of a man. As the marshals escorted him toward the private elevator foyer, he cast one final, lingering look of absolute regret toward the room before the heavy doors slid shut, sealing his fate.

Evelyn buried her face in her hands, her muffled sobs echoing quietly against the velvet upholstery of the sofa. She didn’t utter another word of defiance or arrogance. The reality that her family’s social standing, financial security, and future were completely pulverized by her own sheer malice had finally broken her spirit.

“Escort Mrs. Vance out of the hospital property,” my grandfather instructed quietly, not even bothering to look at her as he rested both hands on his silver-handled cane.

Two security guards immediately stepped forward, gently but firmly lifting Evelyn to her feet and guiding her out of the suite without a single word of protest.

Once the heavy double doors clicked shut, the room returned to a profound, peaceful calm. I let out a long, slow breath, feeling the last remaining tension drain from my shoulders. The nightmare was officially over. The past had been thoroughly buried, and the score had been settled with absolute, unyielding justice.

“You handled that with remarkable poise, my dear,” my grandfather said, looking over at me with a warm, approving smile. “Your grandmother would have been exceptionally proud of you.”

“Thank you, Grandfather,” I replied, walking over to the large floor-to-ceiling window that looked out over the hospital courtyard. The morning sun was shining brightly now, casting a brilliant golden light across the entire campus. “I didn’t want revenge for the sake of hurting them. I just wanted to ensure that my children and I would never again be vulnerable to people who measure human worth by bank balances and corporate titles.”

“And you never will be,” my grandfather promised, standing up and walking over to stand beside me. He placed a warm, steady hand on my shoulder. “The legal team has already initiated the formal restructuring of the Gardner Foundation’s medical division to ensure that independent audits prevent any future corporate predators from exploiting our network. More importantly, the trust funds for Sawyer and Quinn have been officially sealed and fully endowed. They will never have to worry about a single thing in this world.”

I smiled, resting my hand over his. “How are they doing this morning? Have the doctors checked their latest charts?”

“Dr. Thorne called just before your visitors arrived,” my grandfather chuckled softly. “Both of them have gained another thirty grams overnight. Their breathing is completely unassisted by the primary ventilators now—they’re just on mild nasal cannulas for support. Dr. Thorne says if they keep this up, we might be able to move them out of the incubators and into open cribs within a couple of weeks.”

A wave of pure, overwhelming joy washed over me, pushing away the last shadows of the trauma from my emergency delivery. My twins were going to be okay. They were growing stronger every single day, surrounded by unconditional love, ultimate security, and a family legacy that would protect them forever.

“Let’s go down to the NICU,” I said softly, turning away from the window with a renewed sense of purpose. “I want to hold their little hands.”

“Lead the way, my dear,” my grandfather replied, offering his arm with a proud smile.
