Chapter 9 - The New Reign

Six months later.
The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was illuminated by crystal chandeliers and filled with Chicago’s elite—politicians, CEOs, high-society figures, and powerful business leaders.
At the center of the room stood Julian Vance, wearing a bespoke tuxedo, accepting congratulations for a massive $50 million donation to the city’s domestic violence shelters and women’s healthcare initiatives.
Beside him stood Harper.
She wore an emerald green silk gown that draped magnificently over her tall, graceful frame. Her dark hair was styled in elegant waves, and a breathtaking diamond necklace sparkled at her throat—a gift from Julian. There was no trace of the pale, frightened girl who had cowered on a linoleum floor. She radiated confidence, poise, and absolute authority.
Sadie stood nearby, conversing happily with a group of architectural designers, having recently been appointed the head of the Vance Foundation’s community restoration project.
As the crowd applauded Julian’s speech, Detective Miller—now stripped of his badge and working as a low-level private security guard—stood in the back corner of the room, glaring bitterly at the couple.
Miller made the mistake of trying to approach Harper as she walked toward the balcony for some fresh air.
“Miss Reed,” Miller muttered, stepping into her path. “Or whatever you’re calling yourself now.”
Harper stopped. She didn't flinch. She didn't look around for protection.
She simply turned her gaze upon Miller, her eyes cool, calm, and commanding.
“Can I help you, Mr. Miller?” she asked smoothly.
“You think you won?” Miller sneered under his breath. “You think hanging around a criminal makes you royalty? I know who you were. A nobody from Harrison Street.”
Harper took a slow step forward. The sharp, decisive click of her high heel echoed against the marble floor.
“Who I was is irrelevant,” Harper said, her voice dropping into a low, controlled tone that sent a chill down Miller’s spine—a tone she had subconsciously learned from Julian. “Who I am is the co-director of the largest philanthropic network in this state. And more importantly, I am the woman who holds Julian Vance’s heart.”
She leaned in slightly, a cold smile touching her lips.
“If you ever speak to me again, or step within ten feet of my sister, I won't call the police, Mr. Miller. I will tell my husband. And you know better than anyone what happens when Julian Vance gets upset.”
Miller’s face went completely pale. He swallowed hard, took two steps back, and practically stumbled over himself as he hurried out of the ballroom.
Harper watched him leave, a quiet sense of triumph blooming in her chest.
Two arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, pulled her back against a broad, warm chest.
“Did he bother you, my love?” Julian murmured into her ear, his breath warm against her skin.
“Not at all,” Harper smiled, leaning back against him. “Just reminding him of the hierarchy.”

Julian let out a soft chuckle, kissing the side of her neck. “I created a monster.”
“No,” she turned in his arms, smiling up at him. “You just reminded me who I was meant to be.”
