Chapter 7 - Truth and Consequences

The feds had no choice but to retreat. Without physical evidence or a body, the warrant was exhausted, and they were forced to leave empty-handed.

As the last police cruiser pulled down the long driveway, Julian descended into the safe room.

When the heavy steel door slid open, Harper surged forward, throwing her cane aside and throwing her arms around Julian’s neck. He caught her instantly, lifting her off her feet and burying his face in her hair, holding her tightly against his heart.

“You’re safe,” she sobbed. “Are they gone?”

“They’re gone,” Julian murmured, rubbing her back. “It’s over.”

He brought Harper back up to the main library, sitting her down on the sofa. Sadie joined them, still shaken but visibly relieved.

“Julian,” Harper said, looking at him seriously. “What really happened to Tyler? The police said... they said he’s missing.”

Julian sat across from her. He knew he could lie to her. He could give her a sanitized story that would protect her soft heart. But as he looked into her clear, honest eyes, he realized he respected her too much to build their relationship on falsehoods.

“Tyler Bennett is not dead,” Julian revealed calmly.

Harper blinked in surprise. “He’s not?”

“No,” Julian explained. “Killing him would have been the easy way out, but it would have brought unnecessary risk to you and my organization. Instead, Tyler Bennett was placed on a cargo vessel bound for a remote mining operation in South America. He is currently working twelve-hour shifts underground, under heavy security. He will never return to the United States. He will never have access to a phone, a vehicle, or freedom again.”

Harper sat in silence, processing the information.

Under normal circumstances, such a dark, extrajudicial punishment would have horrified her. But then she remembered the sound of her leg snapping. She remembered the terror of lying on the linoleum floor, bleeding, waiting for a man who claimed to love her to come back and finish breaking her.

She looked at Julian—a man who used his terrifying power not to oppress, but to protect those who could not protect themselves.

“Good,” Harper said quietly.

Julian raised an eyebrow, surprised by her response.

“He took away my freedom for two years,” Harper added, her voice strong and unwavering. “He doesn't deserve his.”

Julian smiled, a deep sense of pride filling his chest. The fragile, broken girl who had texted him three weeks ago was gone. In her place stood a woman who had found her strength.

“There is one more thing,” Julian said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a thick manila folder. He handed it to her.

Harper opened it. Inside were forged identity papers, a brand-new deed to a beautiful townhouse in Lincoln Park under the name 'Harper Reed', and a bank account setup showing a balance that made her head spin.

“What is this?” she asked.

“Your new life,” Julian said. “The police know the name Harper Reed was associated with Tyler. To ensure Detective Miller or anyone else never bothers you again, my legal team has officially declared Harper Reed a missing person, and created a completely clean, untraceable identity for you and Sadie. You are free, Harper. Fully, completely free.”

Harper looked at the documents, then up at Julian. Her heart sank slightly.

“Does this mean... I have to leave?” she asked softly.
