Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

Julian Vance walked into the room.

He had changed out of his dark suit and was now wearing a tailored charcoal sweater and dark trousers. Without his coat, he looked slightly less imposing, but the raw, electric aura of power surrounding him remained unchanged.

Dr. Evans bowed his head slightly. “I’ll leave you two to talk. The pain pump is on a timer, Mr. Vance. Call me if she experiences discomfort.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” Julian said, nodding as the physician exited, closing the heavy oak door behind him.

Julian walked over to the side of the bed and pulled up a wooden chair, seating himself beside her. He looked at her intently, taking in her bruised cheek and the bandages on her wrists.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

“Like I was hit by a truck,” Harper admitted honestly. She looked down at her hands, then back up at him. “Mr. Vance... I don't know how to thank you for the doctor, but... I don't belong here. I don't have money to pay for surgery, or a private room, or—”

“Do not mention money to me,” Julian cut her off, though his tone was gentle. “Money is irrelevant. Your safety is what matters.”

“Why?” Harper pushed, her voice trembling slightly. “You don't know me. I’m nobody. I work at a community library. I live in a run-down studio. You’re... you’re Julian Vance.”

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. His gaze was steady, piercing straight into her soul.

“Five years ago,” Julian began slowly, “my younger sister, Clara, was in a relationship with a man much like Tyler Bennett. She hid it from me. She was ashamed, afraid, thinking she could fix him. By the time I found out, it was too late. He... he took her life in a fit of rage.”

Harper gasped, her hand moving to her mouth.

“When I received your text last night,” Julian continued, his voice dropping an octave, “I saw my sister’s face. I swore on Clara’s grave that if I ever had the chance to stop a monster like that again, I would burn the world to the ground to do it. You sent that message to my phone, Harper. Whether by divine intervention or absolute luck, you called upon me. And I will not fail you.”

Tears welled in Harper’s eyes. For two years, Tyler had convinced her that she was worthless, that no one would ever care about her, that if she called for help, no one would answer.

And now, sitting in front of her, was a man who commanded an empire, telling her that her life was worth saving.

“What... what happened to Tyler?” she asked quietly.

Julian’s face went cold, the warmth draining from his eyes for a brief second before returning.

“Mr. Bennett has been dealt with,” Julian said smoothly. “He will never lay a hand on you, or any other woman, ever again. You do not need to fear him. Ever.”

Harper felt a massive weight lift off her chest—a suffocating burden she hadn't realized she had been carrying for years. She sank back into the pillows, a long, shaky breath escaping her lips.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

“Now,” Julian said, standing up and smoothing his sweater. “You will stay here until your leg is completely healed. My staff will cater to whatever you need. If you wish to contact your sister, Sadie, my security team will bring her here safely so you can see her.”

May you like

“Sadie?” Harper’s eyes lit up. “Can I really see her?”

“Of course,” Julian smiled—a rare, beautiful sight that softened his harsh features entirely. “This is your sanctuary now, Harper. No one enters without my permission. And no one leaves unless they want to.”
