Chapter 9 - The Crescent Moon

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of amber and violet, the backyard party began to wind down.

The neighbors had gone home, the soccer ball was resting quietly under the patio bench, and the two boys had finally worn themselves out, sitting side by side on the wooden porch steps with melting ice cream cones in their hands.

Nathan walked out onto the back deck holding two cups of coffee, handing one to Claire as she stepped out the sliding glass door to join him.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Nathan asked softly, resting his shoulder against the wooden doorframe.

Claire took a sip of the warm coffee, her gaze fixed on Caleb and Cody, who were leaning against each other, exhausted and happy.

"I was just thinking about that night in the emergency room," Claire said, her voice laced with a quiet wonder. "If Cody hadn't been in that car accident... if his heart condition hadn't flared up right then... we never would have known. We would have spent the rest of our lives believing they were gone."

Nathan wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side. "It’s terrifying to think about how close we came to missing them."

"Do you believe in fate, Nathan?" she asked, looking up at him with those familiar gray-blue eyes.

"I used to believe in science and cold hard facts," Nathan smiled, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head. "Now? I believe that some bonds are written so deep in our DNA that even the darkest lies can't erase them."

Across the yard, Cody suddenly pointed up at the evening sky, where a sliver of a waxing crescent moon was just beginning to glow against the deepening blue twilight.

"Look!" Cody shouted, elbowing his brother. "It’s our moon!"

Caleb looked up, grinning widely. "Mom says it means we always belong together."

Nathan and Claire exchanged a knowing smile as the boys cheered, racing back out onto the grass to chase fireflies under the evening sky.
