Chapter 3 - The Awakening Below

Two floors down, in the surgical recovery ward, Rachel Turner stirred.

The heavy fog of general anesthesia began to lift, replaced by a dull, throbbing ache across her abdomen where surgeons had repaired a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding. Her eyelids fluttered open, adjusting to the harsh fluorescent lights overhead.

A nurse was checking her IV drip. "Welcome back, Mrs. Turner. You're doing great."

Rachel swallowed past a throat as dry as sandpaper. Her memories rushed back in a chaotic wave—the blinding flash of headlights, the terrifying screech of metal, Caleb screaming from the backseat, and Cody going frighteningly limp.

"My boys," she gasped, her hands clawing instinctively at the sheets. "Where are my boys?"

"They're safe," the nurse said soothingly, adjusting her pillow. "Your older boy, Caleb, has a broken arm, but he's resting upstairs. And Cody made it through his heart surgery. He's in the pediatric ICU."

Rachel let out a ragged breath of relief, but the relief vanished the second a terrifying thought struck her.

"Who... who performed the surgery on Cody?"

"Dr. Cole," the nurse replied with a warm smile, oblivious to the storm she was unleashing. "He's an exceptional pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon. He saved your son's life tonight."

Rachel’s blood ran cold. The monitors beside her bed spiked, a rapid cluster of beeps signaling her rising heart rate.

"No," Rachel whispered, terror gripping her chest tighter than the surgical incisions. "No, no, no. Get him away from them."

"Mrs. Turner, calm down, your heart rate is—"

"You don't understand!" Rachel cried out, tears of panic spilling over her cheeks as she tried to sit up, ignoring the agonizing pull of her stitches. "Keep Dr. Cole away from my boys! He can't find out where they came from!"

The nurse pressed the emergency call button overhead. "Doctor, we need assistance in room 204—patient is experiencing acute distress!"

As footsteps echoed down the hallway, Rachel closed her eyes, knowing the secret she had guarded for seven years had finally caught up to her.
