Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the ICU

Nathan and Claire stood together beside Cody’s bed. Claire had her hand pressed gently against her son’s uninjured arm, her thumb stroking the soft skin of his wrist. She was crying quietly, marveling at the slope of his nose, the dark fringe of his eyelashes—features that were identical to the man standing beside her.
"He looks like you," Claire whispered. "He has your exact hands."
"And your mouth," Nathan added, a rare, tender smile touching his lips. "When he gets stubborn, you'll see."
The door to the ICU swung open sharply. A breathless resident rushed in, looking directly at Nathan. "Dr. Cole, you're needed in recovery immediately. Patient Rachel Turner just regained consciousness and is having a severe panic attack. She's refusing medical treatment and demanding you stay away from the boys."
Nathan’s expression hardened instantly. The tenderness of the moment evaporated, replaced by a cold, investigative fury.
"Did she say why?" Nathan asked.
"She kept screaming that you couldn't find out where they came from," the resident said, looking bewildered. "She seemed terrified of you."
Claire looked up at Nathan, her gray-blue eyes flashing with confusion and suspicion. "Why would she be terrified of you? Unless..."
"Unless she knows how they ended up in her custody," Nathan finished for her. He looked at Claire with a fierce intensity. "Stay here with the boys. I'm going down there to get answers."
When Nathan reached the recovery ward, security guards were standing outside Rachel Turner's room. He flashed his badge, pushed past the door, and stepped into the sterile cubicle.
Rachel was pale, sweating, and trembling against the pillows. When she saw Nathan step into her line of sight, she shrank back against the headboard, her eyes wide with animal panic.
"Dr. Cole," she choked out, her voice raspy. "Please... just leave me alone."
"It's a little late for that, Mrs. Turner," Nathan said, his voice dangerously calm as he stepped closer to the bed. He crossed his arms over his chest, his lab coat falling open to reveal the crescent-shaped birthmark near his collarbone. "You have my sons."

Rachel stared at him, her chest heaving. For a long moment, the room was dead silent save for the hum of the heart monitor.
"I didn't steal them," Rachel whispered finally, her defenses crumbling as she buried her face in her hands. "God help me, Nathan... I didn't steal them from you."
