Chapter 7 - The Courtroom Showdown

The family court hearing was held in a sleek, sunlit courtroom downtown.

Trevor sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit over a white prison t-shirt, looking pale, exhausted, and hollowed out. His high-priced defense attorney had already advised him that pleading guilty to the financial charges was his only hope of avoiding a ten-year federal sentence, and in family court, his chances of getting custody of Emma were zero.

Rebecca walked into the courtroom wearing a sharp navy-blue blazer, her head held high, carrying herself with a grace that commanded the room. Her father sat directly behind her, flanked by his legal team.

Judge Patricia Vance—a notoriously stern magistrate known for zero tolerance regarding domestic violence—looked down from the bench with an expression of profound disapproval.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said, looking directly at Trevor. "In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a more transparent display of cowardice. You abused your wife while she was carrying your child, you attempted to intimidate her into silence, and you tried to manipulate this court with fraudulent affidavits."

Trevor kept his eyes fixed on the varnished wood of the table. He didn't dare speak.

"The court grants full, sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Emma Sterling, to the petitioner, Rebecca Sterling," Judge Vance read aloud, her gavel coming down with a sharp, echoing crack. "Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued, prohibiting you from coming within five hundred yards of Rebecca Sterling, her children, or her property for the rest of your natural lives."

Rebecca let out a long, slow breath. The knot of tension that had lived in her chest for years finally dissolved.

She turned around and looked at her father. Jonathan smiled—a rare, proud, radiant smile that made him look decades younger.
