Chapter 6 - The Fall of Victoria Lane

The grand entrance hall of the Hawthorne mansion was bathed in warm light, but the air inside was thick with tension.
Victoria Lane stood near the grand curved staircase, dressed in an elegant red silk dress, admiring a diamond necklace in a hand mirror. She was waiting for Richard to return from his evening meetings so they could discuss the final signatures for the Swiss boarding school enrollment forms, which sat neatly in her designer leather folder on the foyer table.
The heavy oak front doors swung open.
Victoria turned, putting on her most charming, dazzling smile. "Darling, you're back late. I was beginning to think—"
Her smile withered instantly.
Richard stepped into the foyer. But he was not alone.
Behind him walked Marcus and two uniformed police officers. And standing right beside Richard, holding her chin high, was Emily Carter, wearing clean, dignified dark clothes, her eyes fixed sharply on Victoria.
Victoria’s face drained of all color. Her hand mirror slipped from her fingers, shattering into dozens of tiny pieces on the polished marble floor.
"Richard?" Victoria stammered, her voice high and unstable. "What... what is this? What is she doing back in this house? I told you she's a criminal!"
"The only criminal in this house, Victoria, is standing in front of me," Richard said, his voice echoing like thunder across the grand hall.
"What are you talking about?" Victoria demanded, trying to put on an air of offended nobility. "Are you out of your mind? You're bringing a thief back into our home?"
Marcus stepped forward, opening a thick leather folder and laying several documents on the marble table right next to Victoria's boarding school applications.
"Ms. Lane," Marcus said professionally. "These are certified forensic reports from the estate's security network, alongside your personal bank statements from the Cayman Islands. We have clear evidence of manual camera manipulation, fraudulent watch purchases, and unauthorized third-party transfers intended to secure illegal placement for the Hawthorne children overseas."
Victoria’s eyes darted frantically from the papers to Richard, her composure rapidly unraveling. "This is a setup! She made this up! She’s trying to ruin us, Richard! You have to believe me!"
"I believed you once," Richard said, taking a step toward her, his tone cold enough to freeze water. "I trusted you over a woman who gave her heart to my children. I allowed you to poison my home. That was the greatest mistake of my life. It will not happen a second time."
One of the police officers stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Victoria Lane, you are being placed under arrest for grand larceny, filing a false police report, and attempted fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
"Get your hands off me!" Victoria shrieked, struggling violently as the metal cuffs clicked around her wrists. "Richard! You can't do this to me! I am your fiancée! We are supposed to be married in two months!"
"The engagement is over," Richard said without a shred of emotion. "Remove her from my sight."
"You'll regret this!" Victoria screamed as the officers dragged her toward the heavy front doors. "You'll never survive without me! Those bratty children will ruin your life!"
Her shrieks faded down the long driveway as the police car doors slammed shut, followed by the sound of receding sirens.
Silence descended upon the grand foyer once again.
Richard turned to Emily. The coldness in his eyes melted away, replaced by an immense weight of sorrow and gratitude.
"I'm sorry you had to witness that," Richard said quietly.
"She can't hurt them anymore," Emily said softly, looking up toward the second floor. "That's all that matters."
Suddenly, from the top of the grand staircase, a tiny voice squeaked through the banisters.
"Miss... Miss Emily?"
Emily looked up.

Standing at the top of the stairs, clad in their matching blue flannel pajamas, were Ethan, Noah, and Liam. They were rubbing their sleepy eyes, staring down as if they were seeing a ghost.
Emily’s heart surged. She didn't say a word. She simply took off her coat, dropped it onto a chair, and ran up the stairs as fast as her legs could take her.
