Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

Emily stood frozen behind the wooden counter, her hands resting motionless on a pile of discarded flower stems. She searched Richard’s face for any sign of a trap, any lingering cruelty, but found only raw, unvarnished regret.

"What are you saying?" she asked, her voice hardly more than a whisper.

"Victoria framed you," Richard said directly, his eyes refusing to look away from hers. "My security team uncovered the digital trail today. She bypassed the security system from her own computer. She bought the watch herself using a secondary account, planted it in your bag, and staged the whole scene to have you removed."

Emily gasped, a hand rising to cover her mouth. For months, she had lived with the heavy stain of being branded a thief, carrying the weight of an unearned shame. Hearing the truth spoken aloud by the very man who had cast her out felt like a physical weight lifting off her chest, leaving her dizzy.

"Why?" Emily managed to ask, her voice shaking. "Why would she do that to me? I only ever did my job."

"Because you were in her way," Richard replied, taking another step closer, though keeping a respectful distance. "You protected my children. You loved them. And as long as you were in that house, she couldn't execute her plan to send Ethan, Noah, and Liam away to a boarding school in Switzerland."

At the mention of the boys, Emily’s posture instantly shifted. The defensive fear melted away, replaced by maternal fierce anxiety. "Switzerland? Is she trying to send them away now? Are the boys okay?"

"They are miserable, Emily," Richard admitted, his voice cracking slightly. "They haven't smiled since the day you left. They barely eat. They lock themselves in their room and cry for you every single night. I was too blind, too caught up in my work and my own past grief, to see what was happening right under my roof."

He took a deep breath and pulled a sleek black tablet from his coat pocket, laying it gently on the counter. On the screen was a detailed dossier containing bank records, deleted emails, and sworn affidavits from his security team.

"I am confronting her tonight," Richard said, his expression hardening into cold steel. "The police and my legal team will be waiting at the estate. Her reign in my life ends today. But I didn't come here just to tell you this."

He looked at Emily, his dark eyes filled with a humility she had never seen in him during her three years of service.

"I came to apologize," Richard said softly. "I threw money at your feet. I insulted your integrity. I robbed my sons of the only person who offered them genuine warmth. I don't expect you to forgive me, Emily. I don't deserve your forgiveness. But I am begging you... for the sake of Ethan, Noah, and Liam... please come back."

Emily stared at the billionaire who was currently standing before her, virtually begging for her return. A storm of emotions raged inside her. The pain of the humiliation still stung; the memory of being dragged away by security guard orders remained fresh.

"Mr. Hawthorne," Emily said carefully, tears welling in her eyes. "You broke my heart that day. But more importantly, you let your children believe that the person who cared for them was a criminal."

"I know," Richard bowed his head, accepting the weight of her words. "And I will spend as long as it takes to make it right. Name your terms. Whatever you want—a new contract, full authority over the household staff, anything. Just please... help me fix what I broke."

Emily looked around the tiny flower shop, at the quiet, peaceful life she had built over the two months. It was safe here. No grand mansions, no icy high-society politics, no deceitful fiancées.

Then, she pictured Ethan’s small face, Noah’s bright tearful eyes, and Liam holding his shoe on the wrong foot, screaming her name as she was forced away.

She closed her eyes, letting a single tear fall down her cheek.

"I don't want a contract, Mr. Hawthorne," Emily said, opening her eyes with quiet determination. "And I don't want your money. I am coming back for those three little boys. And when I return, I want to ensure that woman never comes near them again."

Richard let out a long breath, a look of profound relief washing over his features. "She won't. I promise you, Emily. She never will again."
