Chapter 1 - The Departure

The rough scrape of a worn suitcase echoed along the spotless streets of the city’s most exclusive gated neighborhood.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

Each step felt like a public display of Emily Carter’s shame.

She tightened her hold on the handle and kept moving, resisting the urge to look back. She knew that if she turned around even once, the fragile strength keeping her upright would vanish.

She was still wearing her navy housekeeper uniform.

The bright yellow cleaning gloves were still on her hands.

Everything had happened so quickly that she had not even been given time to remove them.

“Leave. Now.”

Richard Hawthorne’s words kept replaying in her mind.

For three years, Emily had worked inside the billionaire’s vast mansion. While the world saw Richard as a powerful technology mogul whose wealth seemed endless, Emily knew another side of his life. She had seen the loneliness behind the luxury, especially through the eyes of his children.

Tears ran down her face as she walked.

Not because she had lost her job.

Not because she had been accused of something she had never done.

The pain came from knowing she was leaving Ethan, Noah, and Liam behind.

The five-year-old triplets had come into the world without ever knowing a mother’s love. Their mother had died during childbirth, leaving a space that money could never fill. Over time, Emily had become the one who comforted them after bad dreams, celebrated their small victories, and made the enormous mansion feel like a home.

Only an hour earlier, Richard’s fiancée, Victoria Lane, had carried out a plan with alarming precision.

A missing Rolex watch.

Proof carefully hidden where it would be found.

A dramatic accusation delivered at exactly the right moment.

“She took it, Richard. I found it in her bag.”

That was all it took.

Richard did not pause to investigate.

He did not ask Emily for her side of the story.

He did not consider the years she had spent serving his family with complete loyalty.

Instead, he chose to trust the woman he planned to marry.

His decision came immediately.

“Get out. And stay away from my children.”

The words hit harder than any rejection.

There was no discussion.

No chance to defend herself.

No opportunity to explain.

Only humiliation.

As if to make things worse, Richard had thrown a thick stack of cash onto the floor, treating her loyalty as something that could be handed over and discarded.

Emily left every dollar where it landed.

She wanted nothing from him.

Yet as she walked away, another worry pressed heavily on her heart.

Richard was unaware of a danger she had noticed long ago.

Victoria did not care for the triplets.

Emily had overheard enough conversations to know that Victoria saw the boys as obstacles rather than children. More than once, she had spoken about sending them away to an overseas boarding school so they would no longer interfere with the future she imagined for herself and Richard.

The memory made Emily’s stomach tighten.

Then suddenly, the quiet afternoon broke apart.

“MISS EMILY!”

The urgent cry stopped her in place.

Her heart jumped.

“MISS EMILY! WAIT!”
