Chapter 3 - Kneeling on Marble

To the shock of every billionaire, heiress, politician, and photographer in the garden, Alexander Vance did not wait for security. He did not order someone else to handle the situation.
He walked past the guards, stopped directly in front of the little girl, and without a moment's hesitation, dropped to both knees upon the sharp, dusty gravel of the garden path.
The trousers of his custom two-thousand-dollar suit pressed straight into the dirty earth. He didn't care.
"Hey there," Alexander said softly.
His voice was entirely different now. The icy edge that made boardrooms tremble was completely gone, replaced by a deep, gentle warmth that Maya hadn't heard since her mother died.
Maya shrank back, pressing herself harder against the table legs. She was used to grown-up men yelling at her to move along, threatening to call the police, or throwing cold water on her when she slept too close to storefronts. She waited for the blow, or the harsh grip on her arm.
Instead, Alexander reached down and unclipped the diamond cufflinks from his wrists, slipping his expensive jacket off his shoulders. With delicate care, he wrapped the soft, warm cashmere-lined jacket around Maya’s shivering shoulders. It dwarfed her small frame, wrapping around her like a heavy, protective blanket that smelled of expensive cedar and clean rain.
"Are you okay, tiny one?" he asked, his blue eyes searching her face.
Maya swallowed hard, clutching the lapels of the jacket with her small, dirty fingers. "I... I didn't steal it," she sobbed, a fresh wave of tears spilling down her cheeks. "I just looked at it. I was so hungry. My tummy hurted."
Alexander felt a cold knot tighten in his chest. He looked down at her hands and saw the faint, reddish mark on the back of her left wrist where Evelyn’s hand had landed.
Slowly, Alexander reached out, offering his open palm. "My name is Alex," he said gently. "What's your name?"
"M-Maya," she whimpered.
"Maya," he repeated, as if it were the most important name he had ever heard. "That's a beautiful name."
He looked up at the five-tier cake above them, then back down at Maya. "You know, Maya, this cake is actually very boring. It's mostly sugar and air. But if you're hungry, you can have whatever you want."
He stood up, taking Maya’s small hand in his. He didn't care about the dirt on her skin or the dust on her feet. He held her hand firmly, offering a solid anchor in a world that had been drowning her for months.
Then, he turned around to face the crowd.
The warmth in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a glacial, lethal stillness as his gaze landed on Evelyn Vance and the gala's lead coordinator.
"Who organized this event?" Alexander asked softly.
The lead coordinator, a stout man named Richard, stepped forward, trembling, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. "Mr. Vance... it's a charity event for underprivileged children! We raised over three million dollars tonight!"
"You raised three million dollars," Alexander said, his voice ringing through the garden, "to help children 'in need'... while a four-year-old girl was starving outside your gate. And when she walked in, you hit her."
"She's a trespasser!" Evelyn sputtered, trying to regain her composure, though her voice shook. "She ruined the aesthetic of the evening! Look at her! She's filthy!"
Alexander took a step toward Evelyn. The entire crowd took a collective breath back.
"This event is canceled," Alexander announced coldly. "Every contract my firm holds with your foundations is terminated as of this second. And Mrs. Vance... your husband's firm relies on Vance Global for forty percent of its logistics supply chain. By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, that contract will cease to exist."
Evelyn gasped, her face turning as white as the icing on the cake. "You... you can't do that over a homeless brat!"
"She is not a brat," Alexander snapped, his voice thunderous. "She is a human being. And as of tonight, she is under my protection."
May you like
He turned back to Maya, his expression softening instantly as he picked her up into his arms, letting her rest her weary head against his shoulder.
"Come on, Maya," he whispered near her ear. "Let's go get some real food."
