Chapter 2 - The Silence Before the Storm

The sound of the slap was not loud, but in the hushed, refined air of the estate's private courtyard, it echoed like a pistol shot.

The woman who had struck Maya’s hand was Evelyn Vance. She was forty-five years old, tailored in a emerald-green silk gown that cost more than a family in the slums earned in two years, and she was the head of the gala’s organizing committee. Her hair was styled in a rigid, perfect chignon, and her lips were painted the shade of dried blood.

"Security!" Evelyn’s voice cut through the air, sharp and unyielding. "Where are the guards? How did this... this creature get inside?"

Maya pulled her hand back against her chest. The back of her small wrist burned red where Evelyn’s manicured nails had grazed her. She stepped back, her heels pressing against the edge of the marble table, her wide brown eyes darting desperately toward the dark hedges she had come from. But two heavy-set guards in tailored black uniforms were already moving toward her, their boots crunching on the manicured gravel.

The surrounding guests exchanged uncomfortable glances. A few women turned away, dabbing their lips with linen napkins as if the sight of a filthy child was an offense to their senses. A man in a tailored tux cleared his throat and adjusted his cufflinks, whispering to his companion, "Security really slacked off tonight. Unbelievable."

"Don't touch the food," Evelyn sneered down at the child, her face twisted in disgusted annoyance. "This event is for serious donors. This food costs hundreds of dollars a plate. It is not for stray street animals."

Maya didn't understand the word donors. She didn't understand the cost of a plate. She only understood the word animal, because the landlord had used it when he tossed her mother's cardboard boxes into the alley. A tear spilled over her dirty cheek, cutting a clean white track down her dust-stained skin.

"Please," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible above the rustle of the wind. "I just... I just wanted a bite. I was hungry."

"You should be in an asylum or a shelter, not ruining an elite fundraiser," Evelyn hissed, stepping forward to grab Maya by the shoulder herself, eager to push her toward the guards before the news camera crews near the main stage turned around.

"Touch her again," a voice boomed from behind the dessert pavilion, "and I will personally buy your husband's entire company by midnight and fire every member of your family by dawn."

The voice was not raised to a shout, yet it possessed a terrifying, absolute authority that froze the entire courtyard instantly.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea.

Walking through the gap was Alexander Vance—no relation to Evelyn, despite the shared surname, though the difference between them was the difference between a pebble and a mountain. At twenty-eight, Alexander was the CEO of Vance Global, a technological and real estate empire valued in the tens of billions. He was a young billionaire known not just for his staggering wealth, but for his cold, unyielding precision in business, and his fierce, almost ruthless independence.

He wore a tailored dark charcoal suit, devoid of the flashy gold pins or silk ties the other men flaunted. His dark hair was brushed back, framing a face defined by a sharp jawline and icy blue eyes that were currently fixed on Evelyn Vance with a fury that could incinerate steel.

Evelyn paled instantly, her hands dropping to her sides as if burned. "M-Mr. Vance... Alexander. You don't understand. This ragged child snuck past security—"

May you like

Alexander ignored her completely. He didn't even look at her.

His eyes were locked on the terrified four-year-old girl cowering against the legs of the dessert table.
