Chapter 10 - The Sweetest Slice of Life

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of pink, orange, and gold, the guests began to quiet down, gathering around the main garden stage for the evening's final toast.
Alexander walked down the terrace steps and joined Maya near the edge of the lawn. He wrapped a gentle arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to his side. Maya leaned into him naturally, wrapping her arm around his waist.
"I saw what you did over by the dessert table earlier," Alexander said softly, looking down at her with immense pride.
Maya looked up at him, her brown eyes sparkling in the warm evening light. "He was hungry, Dad. Just like I was."
"I know," Alexander said softly, kissing the top of her head. "You have a good heart, Maya. The best heart."
"Because I learned it from you," she said simply.
A photographer from a national news outlet stepped forward, politely asking if he could take a photo of the two of them for the foundation's annual report. Five years ago, Alexander would have refused instantly, despising public attention. Today, he smiled, nodded, and pulled his daughter closer.
"Daddy?" Maya whispered as the photographer raised his camera.
"Yes, tiny one?"
"Do you remember what that lady said to me at the gala five years ago?"
Alexander's hand tightened gently on her shoulder, though there was no pain in his memory anymore—only the warmth of how far they had come. "I remember."
"She was wrong," Maya said softly, looking out at the dozens of happy children playing freely on the lawn, eating cake, laughing without fear under the evening sky. "Food is for everyone. Love is for everyone too."

Alexander smiled—a deep, complete smile that reached all the way to his soul.
"Yes, it is, Maya," Alexander agreed quietly as the camera flashed, capturing the moment forever. "Yes, it is."
