Chapter 10 - The Bright Horizon

Ten months after that cold, rainy December night when Corinne Hardy stood outside her own front door listening to her frightened daughter’s whispered plea, the world outside was warm, green, and alive with the vibrant colors of autumn.
It was October 22.
The air was crisp and smelled of falling leaves and woodsmoke. Corinne pulled her car into the driveway of their home on Elm Street, switched off the ignition, and stepped out into the golden afternoon sunlight.
As she walked up the front steps, the front door swung open wide before she even touched the handle.
Casey—now five years old and brimming with energy—stood in the doorway wearing a bright orange sweater and a huge, joyful grin. In her arms, she held the same teddy bear wearing its tiny Santa hat, though she had added a handmade autumn leaf crown around its furry head.
“Welcome home, Mommy!” Casey cheered, throwing her arms around Corinne’s neck the moment she reached the porch.
Corinne lifted her daughter effortlessly into her arms, burying her face in Casey’s neck as a wave of immense gratitude washed over her soul.
“It’s so good to be home, my sweet girl,” Corinne whispered, kissing Casey’s cheek.
Inside, the house was filled with the rich aroma of apple cider and baking cinnamon rolls. Aunt Miriam was busy setting the dining room table for dinner, humming a cheerful tune as the afternoon sunlight streamed through the clean, clear windows.

There were no locked doors anymore. There were no false messages, no fabricated videos, and no hidden secrets waiting in the shadows. There was only truth, resilience, unbreakable love, and a future stretching out before them as bright and limitless as the Kansas sky.
Corinne set Casey down gently on the entryway rug, took her daughter’s small hand in her own, and walked across the threshold into a home that was finally, permanently, and completely theirs.
