Chapter 4 - The Digital Trap Springs

The doorknob rattled again, harder this time.
“Ross! The handle won't turn! Someone is inside!” Gwendolyn’s voice spiked with genuine panic, abandoning its usual cool composure.
Corinne stood motionless in the darkness beside her oak desk, the encrypted flash drive clutched tightly in her palm like a weapon. Her military training surged to the forefront of her consciousness: assess the exits, control your breathing, and never surrender the tactical high ground.
Outside, Ross threw his shoulder against the heavy oak door. The frame groaned under the sudden impact, but the reinforced electronic deadbolt held firm.
“Corinne? If that’s you in there, open this door right now!” Ross shouted, his voice dropping its facade of mild reasonableness and turning sharp and venomous. “You’re violating the temporary restraining order! I’m calling the police back!”
“Call them,” Corinne spoke clearly through the heavy wooden barrier, her voice echoing in the small room. “Tell them your second wife is breaking into your office, Ross. Or would you rather explain the offshore accounts first?”
Silence fell instantly on the other side of the door. The aggressive rattling stopped.
Through the faint gap beneath the door, Corinne could see the shadows shifting as Ross and Gwendolyn exchanged panicked glances. The realization that their carefully constructed house of cards had just suffered a catastrophic breach hit them like a physical blow.
“He doesn't know what you have yet,” Gwendolyn whispered furiously just outside the door, forgetting to muffle her voice. “Break the door down! If she has the financial files, we’re finished! Everything we built—gone!”
Corinne didn't wait for them to find a heavy tool or a crowbar. She moved swiftly toward the office window overlooking the side yard. The window was double-paned and locked with a standard latch. She unlatched it, pushed it upward, and slipped out into the freezing Kansas night just as a loud splintering crack echoed behind her—Ross had finally managed to kick the door off its reinforced hinges.
Landing softly on the damp mulch of the flower bed, Corinne didn't look back. She sprinted across the dark yard, leaped over the side fence, and disappeared into the labyrinth of suburban alleys before the outdoor floodlights could catch her movement.
By 2:15 a.m., she was safely back in her rental car parked three blocks away. Her hands were steady as she plugged the flash drive into her laptop to verify the integrity of the downloaded files.
Every single document, bank statement, email thread, and recorded conversation was intact.
Among the files was a digital ledger detailing how Ross had systematically embezzled funds from the mid-sized architectural firm where he worked as a senior project manager, funneling the money through shell corporations managed by Gwendolyn. When Corinne had returned from her overseas deployment earlier than expected, she had inadvertently disrupted their final timeline. They had planned to clean out the remaining marital accounts, file for a rapid default divorce based on fabricated emotional instability, and flee the country for the Cayman Islands before the military could conduct its annual financial audit of service members' families.
Casey had simply been an obstacle in their way—a pawn to be manipulated, frightened, and ultimately discarded if she showed too much loyalty to her biological mother.
Corinne felt a wave of nausea wash over her, followed immediately by an intense, burning clarity. She pulled out her phone and dialed a direct, secure extension.
“Major Hardy,” a crisp, professional voice answered on the second ring. “Reporting outside normal duty hours. State your emergency.”
“Colonel Vance,” Corinne said, addressing her superior officer from the Department of Defense security division. “I have intercepted critical intelligence regarding a domestic financial conspiracy involving classified defense contracting accounts.”
There was a brief pause on the line. “Explain, Major.”
“My civilian spouse, Ross Miller, along with my civilian half-sister, Gwendolyn Vance, have utilized fraudulent identities and offshore shell corporations to siphon funds from defense subcontractor accounts linked to my unit's deployment logistics. I have physical and digital evidence in my possession right now.”
Colonel Vance’s tone shifted instantly from casual military protocol to sharp operational readiness. “Are you secure, Major?”
May you like
“I am secure, Colonel. But my four-year-old daughter is currently in protective custody following a manufactured child-endangerment claim orchestrated by the suspects to cover up their financial crimes.”
“Send the digital archive to the secure command server immediately,” Colonel Vance ordered without hesitation. “We will coordinate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local Kansas federal magistrates before sunrise. Stay put, Major. Cavalry is inbound.”
