Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Upstairs in the grand ballroom, the atmosphere was suffocating. Heavy mahogany tables had been cleared to make way for a long, velvet-covered conference desk. Thirteen syndicate capos—the heads of every major borough, territory, and subsidiary in the Tri-State area—were taking their seats.
Among them sat Vincent Romano, looking every bit the ruthless ruler. He wore a custom tailored suit, Lorenzo’s gold ring on his pinky, and a cold, victorious smirk on his face.
“Gentlemen,” Vincent began, tapping his glass with a silver knife to command the room. “Thank you for coming on such short notice. As you know, our beloved leader, Lorenzo DeLuca, suffered a catastrophic medical emergency early yesterday morning. He has been relocated to a private facility out of the country for long-term care.”
A quiet murmur rippled through the gathered bosses. Some looked doubtful; others looked concerned.
“Therefore,” Vincent continued, his voice echoing with calculated authority, “per protocol, leadership falls to the senior lieutenant. I have called this roundtable to swear in the new charter and reorganize our distribution networks.”
Outside the grand double doors of the ballroom, Paulie "The Hammer" was pacing back and forth, a radio pressed to his ear.
“Where is Bruno?” Paulie hissed into the transmitter. “He went down to the cellar twenty minutes ago and hasn’t come back up! Check the perimeter!”
Down in the service corridors, Lorenzo, supported by Dr. Ricci on one side and carrying Emma safely in his arm, moved like a shadow through the secret servant passages built into the mansion's walls. Sophia walked beside them, holding a heavy iron wrench taken from the boiler room.
“The ballroom has two security guards at the rear doors,” Sophia whispered, having memorized every inch of the estate during her four years as housekeeper. “And Paulie is standing directly outside the main entrance.”
“Paulie is loyal only to money,” Lorenzo said coldly. “He doesn’t care who sits in that chair as long as his envelope is full. But the capos… the capos operate on honor and blood.”
Lorenzo turned to Emma. “Emma, do you remember the song your mama taught you for the holiday dinner?”
Emma nodded brightly. “The one with the bell?”
“Yes,” Lorenzo smiled faintly. “I need you to do something very brave for Uncle Lorenzo.”
Lorenzo pulled the micro-SD card from Dr. Ricci’s tablet and handed it to Sophia. “The ballroom’s media system is controlled from the projection booth above the gallery. Take Sophia and the card up there. When Emma rings the silver dinner bell in the hall, press play.”
“What about you?” Sophia asked, her heart in her throat.

Lorenzo pulled the silenced pistol from his coat pocket, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unwavering resolve.
“I’m going to take back my house.”
