Chapter 6 - Secrets Exposed

By morning, the Carter estate was surrounded by police cruisers, forensic teams, and federal investigators. The intruder captured by Jonathan had already cracked under interrogation, implicating Richard Sterling in a massive corporate embezzlement scheme totaling over fifty million dollars, as well as the attempted kidnapping of Lily Miller.
Richard was arrested at the international airport while attempting to board a private jet to South America.
Inside the mansion, the air felt clear for the first time in years. The dark clouds of suspicion and grief that had hung over the estate since Ethan’s death seemed to dissipate under the bright morning sun.
Jonathan sat across from Emily in the glass greenhouse, drinking coffee while Lily napped peacefully in a portable crib beside them.
“The police recovered everything,” Jonathan said gently, pushing a stack of legal documents across the table toward her. “Richard’s assets have been frozen. The stolen funds from Ethan’s share of the company are being fully restored into a private trust.”
Emily looked at the documents with wide eyes. “How much is in this trust, Jonathan?”
“With the recovered funds and Ethan’s original stock equity… Lily is now worth roughly one hundred and twenty million dollars,” Jonathan replied plainly. “And as her mother and legal guardian, you have full control over the trust’s dividends until she turns twenty-one.”
Emily sank back into her chair, breathless. “I… I was worrying about buying milk three days ago, Jonathan. This doesn't feel real. It feels like a dream I’m going to wake up from back in my old apartment.”
“It’s real, Emily,” Jonathan said, reaching across the table to place his hand over hers. His grip was warm, steady, and reassuring. “And you never have to worry about rent, safety, or Lily’s future ever again.”
Emily looked down at their joined hands, feeling a strange flutter in her chest. Over the past week, she had seen two very different sides of Jonathan Carter. To the world, he was an intimidating, cold billionaire. But to her and Lily, he was a protector—a man who had put his life on the line without hesitation to save them.

“Thank you, Jonathan,” Emily whispered, tears welling in her eyes. “Not just for the money… but for believing in us. For keeping us safe.”
Jonathan smiled softly—a rare, genuine smile that transformed his stern face completely. “Ethan was my brother, Emily. But protecting you and Lily… that isn’t just about Ethan anymore. It’s about you two.”
