Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Truth

Forty-eight hours passed in an agonizing blur. The atmosphere inside the Carter mansion grew increasingly charged. Emily, sensing the rising conflict through the hushed tones of the staff, tried her best to stay out of Jonathan’s way, spending her days in the estate’s vast glass greenhouse with Lily.

Jonathan, however, sought her out constantly. He found himself drawn to the peace that seemed to surround Emily despite her anxiety. For six years, his life had been a endless cycle of corporate warfare, cold decisions, and loneliness. But watching Emily nurse Lily or hearing her soft lullabies echo through the courtyard brought a strange, forgotten tranquility to his life.

Late on Thursday evening, Jonathan received a secure email. The private genetic firm in London had completed the analysis, comparing Lily’s swab against a preserved sample of Ethan’s DNA from the estate’s medical vault.

Jonathan opened the attachment. His eyes scanned down the technical jargon until they landed on the final bolded line:

PROBABILITY OF BIOLOGICAL PATERNAL GRANDCHILD RELATIONSHIP: 99.98%

A heavy sigh of relief escaped Jonathan’s lips. It was real. Lily was indeed Ethan’s granddaughter.

He immediately picked up his phone to call Emily, intending to share the news that her daughter was now officially protected, wealthy beyond measure, and permanently secure. But before the line could connect, the power throughout the entire mansion abruptly shut down.

The lights extinguished, plunging the sprawling house into pitch-black darkness. Emergency backup generators, which should have kicked in within seconds, remained dead.

In the guest suite, Emily gasped as the darkness swallowed her room. Lily began to whimper in her crib.

“It’s okay, sweetie, it’s okay,” Emily soothed, picking up her baby and wrapping her in a warm blanket. She reached for her phone to use the flashlight, but found the screen totally dead—jammed or disabled.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door to her suite clicked open.

“Jonathan?” Emily called out tentatively into the dark hallway. “Is everything alright?”

No voice answered. Instead, the heavy sound of muffled footsteps approached. Emily’s instincts screamed at her. She backed away toward the balcony doors, clutching Lily tightly against her chest.

A silhouette appeared in the doorway—a large man wearing a dark tactical jacket and a cap pulling low over his face. In his hand, he held a heavy leather duffel bag and a silenced sidearm.

“Hand over the baby, lady,” the man said in a raspy voice. “And don’t make a sound if you want to keep breathing.”

Emily’s heart dropped into her stomach. “Who are you? What do you want?”

“The kid’s an inconvenience to some very powerful people,” the intruder growled, stepping closer. “Just hand her over!”

Emily didn't hesitate. She threw a heavy crystal vase off the bedside table straight at the intruder’s head. The glass shattered against his shoulder, catching him off guard. Using the second of confusion, Emily bolted past him into the pitch-black corridor, her feet flying across the carpet as she screamed for help at the top of her lungs.
