Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Estate

Emily’s screams echoed through the cavernous hallways of the Carter estate, breaking the silence of the blackout.

In his study on the ground floor, Jonathan heard the desperate cries. His military training from his early years kicked in instantly. Ignoring the darkness, he grabbed a heavy flashlight from his desk drawer and sprinted up the grand staircase.

“Emily!” he yelled, his voice thunderous.

On the second-floor gallery, Emily was running blindly, holding Lily tightly to her chest. Behind her, the heavy boots of the intruder pounded against the hardwood floor.

“Give me the child!” the man snarled, reaching out to grab Emily’s coat.

Just as the intruder’s fingers brushed her shoulder, a powerful beam of light blinded him. Jonathan materialized out of the dark, tackling the intruder with brute force. The two men crashed into a heavy antique table, sending porcelain vases shattering onto the floor.

“Run, Emily! Get to the panic room in the basement!” Jonathan shouted as he wrestled the gunman for control of the weapon.

Emily didn't look back. She sprinted down the service stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs, guiding herself by memory and the dim moonlight filtering through the high arch windows.

In the gallery, Jonathan slammed the intruder’s hand against the iron balustrade, forcing him to drop the silenced pistol. With a swift strike to the man’s solar plexus, Jonathan brought the attacker to his knees, securing him with a heavy neck restraint until the man went limp.

Breathing heavily, Jonathan pulled a secure radio from the intruder’s belt. A voice crackled through the speaker.

“Unit One, do you have the target? We need to clear out before the local police respond to the perimeter trip.”

Jonathan recognized that voice instantly. It wasn't a random criminal or a rival corporation.

It was Richard Sterling.

Pure fury surged through Jonathan’s veins. His closest legal advisor, the man who had managed the Carter family accounts for over a decade, had sent hired hitmen into his home to eliminate an infant child.

Jonathan picked up his flashlight and the dropped weapon, rushing down to the basement. He found Emily trembling inside the reinforced panic room, clutching Lily, who was crying frantically once again.

“You’re safe,” Jonathan said, stepping inside and locking the heavy steel door behind him. He knelt beside Emily, putting a hand on her shoulder. “I’m here. They won’t touch either of you.”

Emily looked up through tears, her body shaking violently. “Why are they doing this, Jonathan? We don't have anything! We’re nobody!”

“You’re not nobody,” Jonathan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark calm. “You are the heirs to the Miller legacy. And Richard Sterling has been stealing millions from Ethan’s trust fund for five years. He knew that the moment Lily was verified as Ethan’s heir, a full financial audit would be triggered—and he would spend the rest of his life in prison.”

Jonathan pulled out his personal satellite phone, which bypassed the local jammer. He dialed the chief of state police directly.

“This is Jonathan Carter,” he said firmly. “I have an armed invasion at the Carter Estate. And I want an immediate arrest warrant issued for Richard Sterling.”
