Chapter 7 - The Arrest and the Truth

Within minutes, four police cruisers and a fire engine swept through the main entrance of the Sterling estate, their red and blue lights flashing against the wet stone walls and dark trees. Armed officers poured out of the vehicles, weapons drawn, quickly surrounding the driveway.

— Hands where we can see them! On the ground! Now! — an officer commanded through a bullhorn.

Julian kept Vance pinned until the officers rushed in to secure the assistant with steel handcuffs. Arthur Sterling offered no physical resistance as two officers pulled his arms behind his back, placing him under arrest. He remained silent, staring blankly at the ground as his leather briefcase—containing millions in bearer bonds and forged passport documents—was confiscated as evidence.

Victoria was lifted from the muddy ground, crying hysterically as she was handcuffed and escorted toward a separate police vehicle. She looked at Evelyn one last time, her eyes pleading for forgiveness, but Evelyn simply turned her face away, refusing to grant her treacherous sister the satisfaction of a response.

Firefighters rushed past the gate toward the main mansion, unreeling heavy hoses to extinguish the blaze burning in the nursery wing. Thanks to Julian closing the fire doors earlier, the damage was contained to the top floor, preventing the entire historic home from being destroyed.

The lead investigator, Detective Miller, approached Julian and Evelyn as paramedic teams checked them for smoke inhalation.

— Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, — Detective Miller said, holding a notepad under a large umbrella. — We have secured the perimeter. We need to check the panic room to ensure the nanny and the child are safe.

— Follow me, — Evelyn said immediately, her heart aching to hold her baby again.

They walked down into the basement level, accompanied by two armed officers and a paramedic team. Evelyn approached the concealed steel door of the panic room and knocked gently.

— Clara! It’s Evelyn! The police are here, and Arthur has been arrested. It’s safe to come out!

A moment later, the heavy locking mechanism clicked open, and the door swung wide. Clara stepped out, holding baby Leo, who was fast asleep, wrapped safely in his blanket, completely oblivious to the chaos that had transpired around him.

Evelyn reached out and took her son into her arms, pressing her face against his soft hair as tears of pure relief washed over her face. Julian wrapped his arms around both of them, kissing his wife's forehead and resting his hand gently over Leo’s back.

— Thank you, Clara, — Julian said, his eyes shining with profound gratitude as he looked at the nanny. — You saved my son's life tonight. You saved our entire family.

— I was just doing my job, Mr. Sterling, — Clara replied, offering a tired but genuine smile. — Little Leo deserves to grow up in a home full of love, not fear.

Detective Miller stepped forward, taking notes. — We’ve secured the security jammer and the vial of chemical accelerant found near the kitchen prep station. Between Marcus’s testimony, the recorded emergency calls, and the physical evidence on site, we have an ironclad case against Arthur Sterling, Vance, and Victoria. They won't be seeing the outside of a federal prison for a very long time.

— Thank you, Detective, — Julian said firmly. — Make sure they are prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law. No bail, no leniency.

As the officers led the remaining suspects away into the night, the rain began to clear, revealing a bright moon shining over the quiet grounds of the estate.
