Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Doorway

The dark silhouette stood framed against the ambient light of the grand hallway. Evelyn reflexively sprinted toward the crib, putting her body between little Leo and the intruder. Victoria backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, her hands trembling uncontrollably, while Clara remained on her knees near the smoking, ruined flooring, gasping for air as chemical fumes lingered in the air.

— Step away from the child! — Evelyn demanded, her voice cracking under the immense strain of fear and protective fury.

The figure took a deliberate step forward into the dim lighting of the nursery. The heavy black hood was pulled back, revealing not an assassin or a masked burglar, but a tired-looking, middle-aged man wearing a tarnished security technician's uniform. His coat was damp with sweat, and his expression carried an unsettling mixture of remorse and panic.

— Calm down, Mrs. Sterling, — the man said, raising both hands to show he carried no weapons. — I’m not here to hurt you. I came to stop this before it went any further.

— Stop this? — Evelyn echoed, her hands grasping the wooden railing of the crib behind her. — Someone just tried to poison my infant son with industrial acid! And you just corrupted our security feeds! Who are you?

— My name is Marcus, — the technician replied, glancing back nervously into the dark hallway behind him. — I worked for Sterling Industries as an off-site systems engineer until two weeks ago. I was hired three days ago by a third-party contact to install a signal jammer on your home network and wipe specific footage loops. I didn't know what they were planning. I swear on my life, I didn't know it was meant to cover up an attack on a baby!

— Who hired you, Marcus? — Victoria blurted out from the side of the room, her voice unusually sharp, almost hysterical. — Tell us who gave you the order!

Marcus turned his head slowly toward Victoria. The silence stretched between them for a long, agonizing moment.

— The payment came through an offshore dummy account, — Marcus explained, turning back to Evelyn. — But the physical drop for the encrypted jamming key happened yesterday in the parking garage below your husband's office building. The person who handed me the drive was wearing a ring with the Sterling family crest.

Evelyn felt the world tilt around her. Her husband, Julian Sterling, was the sole heir to Sterling Global, a massive real estate and technology conglomerate. Only three people owned a custom ring with that specific crest: Julian, his elderly father Arthur, and Victoria, who had been gifted one by Arthur on her thirty-first birthday.

— That’s impossible, — Evelyn whispered, her gaze swinging toward her sister. — Victoria... you said you left the room after preparing the bottle.

— Evelyn, you can't possibly believe this criminal! — Victoria gasped, crossing her arms defensively. — I am your sister! I brought the formula up here because you were busy taking calls. Why would I ever harm Leo? I love him!

— She didn't put the acid in the bottle, — Clara spoke up suddenly from the floor, her voice steadying as she wiped tears from her cheeks. The nanny stood up slowly, keeping her distance from the corroded patch of wood. — I saw who was near the kitchen prep station ten minutes before Victoria brought the bottle upstairs.

Everyone in the room turned to look at Clara.

— I was returning from the laundry room on the lower level, — Clara continued, her breathing heavy. — I saw Mr. Sterling's personal secretary, Vance, standing near the marble island. He was holding a small vial. When he heard my footsteps, he quickly put it in his breast pocket and pretended to check his watch. I didn't think much of it until I saw the strange residue on the bottle cap right before you were about to feed Leo, Evelyn. That’s why I panicked and knocked it out of your hand!

— Vance? — Evelyn felt completely bewildered. Vance had been Julian's most trusted executive assistant for over seven years. He managed Julian's personal calendar, handled sensitive family affairs, and had full access to the Sterling residence.

— If Vance is involved, then Julian might be in terrible danger right now, — Marcus warned, taking a step toward the doorway. — The jammer wasn't just set up for this nursery. It’s designed to isolate the entire mansion's communication array. Look at your phones.

Evelyn pulled her smartphone from her pocket. The screen displayed "No Service," and the Wi-Fi icon had completely vanished.

Before anyone could make another move, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the main staircase outside the nursery. Footsteps were approaching fast. Marcus moved toward the door to peek out, but before he could look into the corridor, a sudden bang echoed through the house, followed by the metallic click of a deadbolt locking the nursery door from the outside.

— Hey! — Marcus slammed his shoulder against the heavy oak door, but it didn't budge. — We're locked in!

— The smart locks! — Victoria screamed, rushing toward the door and rattling the brass handle violently. — Someone activated the central security protocol from the main terminal!

From the hallway outside, a calm, cold voice filtered through the wood paneling. It was not Vance, nor was it an unknown technician.

— Evelyn, my dear, — spoke the voice of Arthur Sterling, Julian's father and the patriarch of the Sterling family. — I am truly sorry it had to come to this. But the Sterling line cannot be passed down to a child who does not carry our true bloodline.

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. She gripped the crib railing so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white. — Arthur?! What are you talking about? Leo is Julian’s biological son! What have you done to my husband?

— Julian is fine for now, sleeping comfortably in his study after drinking his evening tea, — Arthur replied through the door, his tone entirely devoid of emotion. — He knows nothing of this. By the time he wakes up, there will have been a tragic accident in the nursery. A faulty electrical line leading to a sudden fire. The jammer will ensure no automated emergency signals leave the estate until it is far too late.

— You're insane! — Victoria shrieked, pounding her fists against the door. — Let us out, Arthur! I'm your family too!

May you like

— You chose to align yourself with Evelyn’s poor background, Victoria, — Arthur responded coldly. — You are an acceptable casualty to preserve the integrity of the family legacy. Goodbye, my dear family.

The heavy thud of footsteps retreated down the hall. A moment later, the distinct smell of burning insulation began to seep through the ventilation shafts above their heads.
