Chapter 3 - The Flames of Betrayal

Gray smoke began to spill out of the ceiling vents in thin, wispy ribbons, carrying with it the bitter stench of burning rubber and chemical accelerant. The temperature inside the closed nursery started to rise rapidly, turning the once-peaceful sanctuary into a suffocating trap.

— We need to get out of here right now! — Marcus shouted, looking around the room for heavy objects. He grabbed a heavy bronze floor lamp from the corner, pulled off its silk shade, and began swinging the solid metal base against the thick oak paneling of the locked door.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

The wood splintered slightly, but the high-grade security door, installed precisely to protect the family from outside threats, was reinforced with a interior steel core. It barely budged under the impacts.

— It’s no use! — Evelyn cried out, snatching Leo from his crib and wrapping him tightly in a thick wool blanket to protect his delicate lungs from the rising smoke. — The doors are reinforced! The windows are made of impact-resistant safety glass!

Clara rushed over to the bathroom attached to the nursery, turning on the faucets full blast. She soaked several bath towels in cold water and ran back into the room, tossing one to Marcus and handing another to Evelyn.

— Cover your noses! — Clara instructed, her voice remarkably focused despite the mounting panic. — The smoke is going to drop low fast!

Victoria was pacing near the massive window bay, her eyes wide with terror as she looked down at the courtyard three stories below. — We're going to burn to death! Arthur has gone completely mad! Evelyn, what was he talking about? What did he mean about Leo's bloodline?

Evelyn held her crying baby close to her chest, her mind spinning amidst the chaos. — I don't know! Julian and I did a genetic screen before Leo was born at the Sterling Private Medical Center! Everything was verified! Arthur was the one who insisted on using his personal medical staff for all of our prenatal care...

A sudden realization struck Evelyn like a physical blow. She looked up at the ceiling vents, where the smoke was growing thicker by the second.

— The medical center, — Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackling sounds in the walls. — Arthur didn't want Julian to marry me because I didn't come from an aristocratic family. When I got pregnant, he must have ordered the doctors to alter the test results or lie to him about the baby's paternity to justify cutting us out of the inheritance... but when Leo was born looking identical to Julian as a child, Arthur knew he couldn't hide the truth forever!

— He wanted to eliminate Leo before Julian made him the primary heir in the new family trust! — Victoria gasped, clutching her damp towel to her mouth. — Today was the deadline for signing the new estate documents!

— Marcus! — Evelyn called out to the technician, who was now coughing heavily as he tried to pry open the window frame with a metal bracket. — Can you override the window's electric locks from the control panel inside the room?

— The main power to the room’s smart frame is cut! — Marcus grunted, his muscles straining against the heavy frame. — But if I can short-circuit the internal sensor wire inside the wall outlet near the window, the emergency failsafe should automatically trigger and release the latch!

— Do it! — Evelyn urged.

Marcus dropped to his knees near the baseboards, ignoring the stinging smoke in his eyes. Using the sharp edge of the broken bronze lamp base, he violently ripped away the plastic wall plate, exposing a tangle of insulated wires. With precise, trembling hands, he pulled two contrasting wires together, creating a bright blue spark that popped sharply in the darkened room.

Instantly, a loud metallic click echoed from the window frame. The heavy safety glass disengaged, sliding open a few inches to let in a rush of cool night air.

— It worked! — Victoria cried out.

However, their momentary relief was shattered as a wall of orange fire suddenly erupted through the ventilation shaft above them. The ceiling drywall buckled and collapsed in a shower of sparks, dropping flaming debris onto the plush carpet right between the group and the window.

The fire spread with terrifying speed, fueled by the accelerant Arthur had poured into the HVAC system. The path to the window was entirely blocked by a roaring wall of flames.

— Evelyn! Hand me the baby! — Clara shouted, stepping toward the fire with a wet blanket stretched out in her arms. — I'll jump across first!

— No! — Evelyn shouted back, her motherly instinct fiercely rejecting the thought of letting go of her son. — We cross together!

At that precise moment, a loud thump sounded from the other side of the locked nursery door. The heavy oak paneling shook under a violent impact, followed by the distinct sound of a power saw cutting through the locking mechanism.

Sparks flew into the hallway as the deadbolt was forcibly carved away from the frame. The heavy door burst open, falling inward with a deafening crash.

Through the dense smoke standing in the doorway was Julian Sterling, holding a heavy iron fire extinguisher, his clothes disheveled and his face covered in soot.

— Evelyn! — Julian roared, his eyes locking onto his wife and child through the haze of fire. — Get out! Move toward the door now!
