Chapter 2 - The Cold Night at the Saint Jude Shelter

The rain poured down in sheets, drenching my clothes and plastering my newly chopped, uneven strands of hair against my face. I stood on the doorstep of the grand mansion, shivering violently not just from the cold, but from the sheer shock of what had just happened. My phone was dead, left charging on the kitchen counter inside. I had no money, no car keys, and no shelter.
Dragging my soaked suitcase, I walked for over an hour through the desolate suburban streets until I stumbled upon the warm glow of Saint Jude Church. Sister Mary, an elderly nun with gentle, lined eyes, opened the heavy wooden doors. Without asking any questions, she saw my tear-stained face, my ruined hair, and my shivering frame, and immediately pulled me into the warmth of the vestibule.
“Child, what on earth happened to you?” she asked softly, wrapping a thick wool blanket around my shoulders.
Over a steaming cup of chamomile tea, I poured out my heart. I told her about Beatrice's cruelty, Liam's cowardly silence, and the humiliation of being cast out like trash. Sister Mary listened patiently, her expression a mix of sorrow and quiet resolve.

“You don't have to endure this abuse, Chloe,” Sister Mary said, placing a warm, calloused hand over mine. “Cruelty like that always comes back to haunt those who dish it out. But right now, you need to find your footing. You are smarter and stronger than you think.”
That night, lying on a narrow cot in the church dormitory, I looked up at the ceiling. The pain in my chest slowly transformed into a cold, unbreakable resolve. I would not crawl back to beg for mercy. I would rise.
