Chapter 5 - Ghosts in the Storm

By three o'clock in the morning, the rain had turned into a howling gale. Inside the nursery, tiny Leo was sleeping peacefully in his crib, monitored by a state-of-the-art heart rate sensor and guarded by two of Dante’s most trusted men stationed outside the door.
Dante and Vivienne were in the master suite on the third floor.
Dante stood by the tall arched windows, wearing a dark silk shirt with the top buttons undone, staring out into the black ocean of Lake Michigan. He held a glass of scotch in his hand.
Vivienne walked up behind him, wrapped in a black satin robe. She reached out and touched his shoulder. "You're thinking about Marco."
Dante took a slow sip of his drink. "Marco was thirty-five when he died. He was soft-hearted. He believed people could change. He thought he could negotiate with your father, build a bridge between our families without shedding blood."
"And you don't believe in bridges?"
"I believe in walls," Dante said, turning to face her. "Walls keep the wolves out. But Marco trusted the wrong people. He brought Clara into his home because she had a sweet face and wept at sad movies. He let his guard down."
Dante set his glass on the marble windowsill and looked at Vivienne. "I promised myself I would never make his mistake. I swore I would never let anyone close enough to hurt me."
"And then I arrived," Vivienne said softly.
"And then you arrived," Dante agreed, his voice rough with emotion. He reached out, sliding his hands around her waist, pulling her flush against him. "You came into my house silent, cold, and angry. I thought you were a curse, Vivienne. But tonight, when I saw you saving Leo, when I saw the fire in your eyes..." He paused, his dark eyes searching her face. "I realized you are the only real thing in this entire rotten city."
Vivienne wrapped her arms around his neck, looking up at him with unyielding strength. "I'm not going to break, Dante. And I'm not going to let anyone destroy what you've built."
Dante leaned down, kissing her deeply, his hands moving down her back, pulling her closer. He lifted her easily, carrying her to the grand king-sized bed in the center of the room.

That night, amidst the thunder crashing over the lake, the last barriers between them vanished. Their passion was a storm of its own—fierce, uninhibited, and desperate. In Dante’s arms, Vivienne found a fierce protection she had never known, and in Vivienne’s grip, Dante found a sanctuary from the dark, violent world he commanded.
They surrendered to each other completely, sealing their pact not with contracts or political agreements, but with absolute, fierce devotion.
