Chapter 8 - The Ambush in the Penthouse

Two days later, the hospital in Madrid sent fresh video footage of Clara’s mother sitting up in bed, smiling and speaking clearly into the camera. Clara watched it three times in a row, tears of joy streaming down her face, while Alessandro stood behind her chair with his hands resting lightly on her shoulders.
“She looks incredible,” Alessandro smiled softly.
“Because of you,” Clara turned, looking up at him with profound adoration in her eyes. “I can never repay you, Alessandro.”
“You already have,” he replied, leaning down.
Before he could kiss her, the penthouse security alarm suddenly shrieked—a high-pitched, piercing wail that echoed through every room.
The automated voice of the AI security system boomed overhead: Warning. Perimeter breach. Sub-level elevator override activated. Multiple hostile signatures detected.
Alessandro’s entire demeanor shifted in a split second. The gentle, loving man vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless mafia boss who had ruled the Eastern Seaboard for a decade.
“Eli!” Alessandro shouted into his encrypted wrist communicator. “Report!”
Eli’s voice came back crackling with static and gunfire. “Boss! We’ve been set up! Salvatore and Marchetti’s men bypassed the garage security. They’ve breached the main lobby elevators. There’s twenty of them, heavily armed!”
“Lock down the east wing!” Alessandro ordered, grabbing a heavy Beretta 9mm from a hidden wall safe behind the mahogany bookshelf and slamming a fresh magazine into place. “Get the safe room active!”
“Boss, they’re already climbing the private stairwell. They’re heading straight for your floor!”
Alessandro turned to Clara, grabbing her by the shoulders with fierce urgency. “Clara, listen to me. Go into the panic room behind the master closet. Lock the steel door from the inside and do not open it for anyone—do you understand me? Anyone except me.”
“Alessandro, no! What about you?” Clara cried, terror gripping her heart.
“I have to end this,” he said, his eyes burning with deadly resolve. “Once and for all.”
He pressed a hidden panel on the wall, revealing a reinforced steel vault door inside the walk-in closet, pushed her gently inside, and closed it before she could protest. The heavy hydraulic locks sealed shut with a resounding thud.
Alessandro turned around just as the double doors of the penthouse master suite were blown off their hinges with a deafening blast of a breaching charge.
Smoke billowed into the room.
Through the haze, figures clad in tactical black gear poured into the hallway. At the front marched Salvatore and three Marchetti enforcers, automatic weapons raised.
“It’s over, Alessandro!” Salvatore shouted over the smoke. “Surrender the penthouse and hand over the girl, and maybe Don Marchetti will let you live in exile!”
Alessandro stepped out from the study into the hallway, his Beretta raised, his body balanced on the balls of his feet like a coiled spring.
“You picked the wrong day to betray me, Salvatore,” Alessandro said, his voice cutting through the smoke like ice.
A hail of gunfire erupted.
Glass shattered, antique woodwork splintered into a million pieces, and the walls of the luxury penthouse were chewed up by high-caliber rounds.
Alessandro moved with supernatural speed, rolling behind an enormous marble pillar as bullets ricocheted off the stone. He returned fire with deadly precision—one shot, one drop. Two enforcers crumpled to the floor instantly.
From behind the pillar, Alessandro advanced, utilizing every angle of his home turf. He took down a third man with a clean shot to the shoulder, then leaped over the living room sofa as a burst of automatic fire chewed up the upholstery.
Salvatore scrambled backward toward the shattered double doors, his face slick with sweat, his rifle trembling in his hands. “Kill him! Flank him!”
Before the remaining enforcers could move, a heavy barrage of suppressive fire echoed from the private service elevator behind them.
Eli and three loyal Ferraro capos burst into the hallway, catching Salvatore’s men in a devastating crossfire. Within thirty seconds, the remaining intruders were disarmed, pinned to the floor, or neutralized.
Salvatore dropped his weapon, falling to his knees as Eli pressed the barrel of a shotgun against the back of his neck.
Alessandro walked slowly out of the smoke, his shirt stained with dust and a minor graze on his forearm, his eyes fixed on Salvatore with terrifying calm.
“Where is Enzo?” Alessandro asked softly.
May you like
“He... he’s waiting at the docks,” Salvatore choked out, trembling in terror. “He thought you’d be distracted by the girl. He’s taking control of the shipping terminals right now.”
Alessandro looked at Eli. “Secure the building. Clean this up.” Then he turned and walked steadily back toward the master suite.
