Chapter 9 - The Restoration of Light

The winter frost finally gave way to the pale, hesitant green of early spring. The gardens of the Kade estate bloomed with rows of white camellias—Odalys’s favorite flowers, which Weston had ordered planted along the eastern walk for the first time in three years.

The locked door at the end of the second-floor hallway—Nadia’s old room—remained closed, but the heavy padlock was gone.

One evening, as twilight painted the sky in shades of amber and violet, Weston stood before that door. His hand hovered over the brass knob. For three years, that room had been a shrine to grief, a tomb of yellow rain boots and unlived years.

Behind him, soft footsteps approached. He turned to see Lily standing there, holding Mimi tightly in one arm and reaching out with the other to hold his hand.

"Can we go in?" Lily asked softly, her big brown eyes looking up at him with pure innocence.

Weston looked down at her, feeling a strange, profound sense of peace wash over him. The ghosts of the past no longer whispered of vengeance and despair; they whispered of redemption.

He turned the knob. The latch gave a soft click, and the door swung open.

The room was bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. The dust motes danced in the air like tiny stars. The yellow rain boots still sat neatly by the toy chest, waiting. But the room no longer felt like a tomb. It felt like a place where a child belonged.

Lily let go of his hand and walked inside, her eyes wide with wonder at the dollhouses and picture books. She picked up a small wooden rabbit from the shelf and turned to Weston with a bright, beaming smile.

"Look, Mr. Weston! Can I show this to Mommy?"

"Yes, Lily," Weston said, his voice thick with emotion as he stepped across the threshold for the first time in three years. "You can show her anything you like."

May you like

Downstairs, Clara stood at the bottom of the grand staircase, looking up toward Nadia’s room. She saw Weston standing in the doorway, smiling down at the little girl who had inadvertently changed the course of a ruthless man's life.

The cycle of violence that had claimed so many lives had finally been broken, replaced not by blood and silence, but by a warmth that reached into the darkest corners of the estate.
