Chapter 8 - The Unraveling of an Empire

Over the next three weeks, the underworld of the city experienced a seismic shock that made the gang wars of the past look like a minor dispute.

With Silas Marchetti locked away in the Kade holding cells and his inner circle stripped of their leadership, Weston systematically dismantled the Marchetti empire from the top down. Legitimate businesses fronting for illegal operations were audited, frozen, and legally absorbed into Kade Holdings. Corrupt city officials who had taken Marchetti bribes were given a simple choice: resign immediately and leave the city, or face federal indictments backed by ironclad financial records provided anonymously to the authorities.

Genevieve Marchetti stood by her word. Rather than fighting Weston for control, she handed over the remaining family shares of the shipping syndicate, choosing a clean break from her father's bloody legacy.

"What will you do now?" Weston asked her one afternoon in his downtown office, as she signed the final transfer papers.

Genevieve looked up, a genuine, unburdened smile on her face for the first time in years. "I’m leaving the city, Weston. Paris, maybe. Somewhere with good coffee and no memories of men in tailored suits discussing murder over dinner. Take care of yourself."

"You too, Genevieve," Weston replied, watching her walk out of his life not as an enemy or a forced bride, but as an ally who had helped him find the truth.

Meanwhile, life at the Kade estate began to undergo a transformation that stunned the household staff.

The heavy iron gates remained, but the oppressive silence that had ruled the halls for three years was broken by something entirely foreign: the sound of laughter.

Clara and Lily had moved into the guest quarters of the estate the very week after Weston's visit to the tenement. At first, Clara had protested, but Weston had gently insisted, providing them with security, medical care, and a future where a four-year-old child would never have to portion out a single slice of bread again.

Weston found himself drawn away from his study and toward the grand gardens where Lily spent her afternoons playing.

One Saturday afternoon, Weston was walking across the lawn when a small, familiar object flew through the air and landed right at his polished shoes.

He looked down. It was the patched rag doll, Mimi, with her button eyes and yarn hair.

Weston knelt, picking up the doll carefully. He looked up to see Lily running across the grass toward him, her little red coat flying behind her like a cape, laughing hysterically.

"Mr. Weston! You dropped Mimi!" Lily stopped right in front of him, her cheeks flushed pink from the winter wind.

Weston stood up, holding the doll out. Instead of taking it, Lily reached out and grabbed his large, calloused hand with her tiny fingers.

"Mimi wants to sit on your shoulder," Lily announced seriously.

Weston blinked in surprise, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his stern face. Carefully, he settled the rag doll onto his broad shoulder, right where Lily wanted it.

Clara walked up behind her daughter, holding a tray with two cups of tea. She smiled warmly at Weston, her eyes holding a depth of gratitude that words could never capture.

"She's been bossing everyone around all morning," Clara said lightly. "I think she thinks she owns the estate now."

"She does," Weston said quietly, looking down at the little girl who was currently examining his gold wristwatch with intense fascination. "We all do."
