Chapter 9 - The Golden Evening

The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violet, amber, and deep rose. Ashgrove Street was quiet, save for the gentle rustle of falling leaves and the distant, cheerful chatter of families sitting down to dinner behind warm, glowing windows.

Kayla walked at a slow, measured pace down the sidewalk, her hands resting comfortably in her pockets.

Trotting faithfully by her left heel was Milo. Despite his fourteen years and stiff joints, the old hound walked with a renewed spring in his step, his tail wagging in a slow, rhythmic beat as he sniffed the familiar scents of the neighborhood trees. The small metal tag on his collar caught the last lingering rays of sunlight, gleaming brightly against his gray fur like a tiny, protective shield.

A young boy riding a bicycle zoomed past them, slowing down just enough to wave enthusiastically. "Evening, Mrs. Vance! Good evening, Milo!"

Kayla nodded and smiled warmly. "Good evening, Leo. Ride safely."

The boy pedaled away, laughing into the twilight.

Wilton walked a few paces behind them, hands clasped behind his back, acting as an unobtrusive guardian angel over the street that had once been a war zone, but was now a sanctuary.

Kayla stopped beneath the canopy of an old oak tree, looking up at the peaceful sky. For the first time in a decade, the phantom weight that had pressed so heavily against her chest was entirely gone. She wasn't just hiding from her past anymore; she had successfully transformed it into a foundation for a better future.

Milo sat down beside her feet, letting out a long, contented sigh as he rested his heavy chin on her shoe. Kayla knelt down, gently scratching behind his floppy gray ears.

"We did good, old friend," she whispered, her voice carrying a quiet, unshakable peace. "We finally found home."
