Chapter 6 - The Iron Judgment

The silence inside warehouse C was absolute, broken only by the steady dripping of condensation from the corrugated ceiling and the heavy, ragged breathing of Viktor Vance.

He was on his knees now, his expensive designer suit stained with engine oil and concrete dust. The silver-plated pistol he had brandished with such arrogance moments ago lay dismantled into a dozen useless pieces on the floor beside him, expertly disassembled by Wilton in less than three seconds.

Kayla stood before him, her hands still tucked calmly into the pockets of her coat. She looked down at him not with anger or malice, but with the detached curiosity of a scientist examining an insect under a microscope.

"You thought Ashgrove Street was an easy target," Kayla said softly. "You thought an old woman living alone with an aging dog meant weakness."

"I... I didn't know," Viktor choked out, blood trickling from a small cut above his left eyebrow where Wilton had introduced his face to a stack of shipping pallets. "The councilman said you were done. He said the syndicate was dead."

"Richard built this empire on three rules," Kayla continued, ignoring his excuses. "Never touch a child, never steal from the working poor, and never, under any circumstances, mistake quietness for mercy."

She crouched down slightly so her eyes were level with his. "You kicked a dog that belonged to a man who gave you a name. You terrified a neighborhood that my husband spent forty years protecting. And worst of all... you interrupted my tea."

Viktor opened his mouth to beg, but the words died in his throat as Wilton stepped out of the shadows, holding a heavy ledger and a digital recording device.

"Boss," Wilton said smoothly. "We've audited their offshore accounts. Every dollar they embezzled from the port authority, every bribe paid to the federal judges, and every front company they used to launder money has been seized and transferred directly to the Ashgrove Community Trust."

Kayla raised an eyebrow. "The community trust?"

"Yes, Boss. We bought every single house on Ashgrove Street, including number 40. The sour-faced neighbor and her delinquent son received an eviction notice twenty minutes ago. They're currently moving their belongings into a tent beneath the highway bridge."

A faint, ghostly smile touched Kayla's lips. "Efficient. Make sure the boy gets a new pair of shoes, though. Winter is coming, and cold feet teach better lessons than fists."

She stood up, brushing a nonexistent speck of dust from her sleeve. She turned her back on Viktor, walking toward the open exit where the cool night air awaited.

"What... what are you going to do with me?" Viktor screamed from the floor.

"You're going to take a nice, long cruise, Viktor," Wilton replied, leaning down and grabbing him by the collar. "Destination: a very quiet, very remote island where you can spend the rest of your natural life reflecting on the importance of minding your own business."
